Rayman is a side-scrolling platformer starring the titular Rayman, a big-nosed chap with no arms or legs. Rayman can jump and use his hair to hover for a short period of time. He can also attack by throwing his fists, or winding up his fists for a more powerful punch. He can occasionally find special power ups that grant him unlimited flying power, giving him the ability to navigate through tricky mazes.
The evil Mr. Dark steals the Great Protoon and defeats Betilla the Fairy. The Electoons are scattered around the world and Rayman must find them and defeat Mr. Dark. The Magician helps out Rayman during the journey by offering special minigames. Tings are collected for extra lives and new powers are earned, such as using Fists and The Helicopter.

The story is a simple set up that all games did back in the 90’s because people didn’t really care that much about stories in video games, it gives you a brief cutscene and then you’re in the game. Very much like most PS1 games. It is your typical 2D platformer clearly some inspiration from Super Mario Bros clearly took place. Although the PS1 can handle 3D styled games, I don't think whoever created this might have had the budget or Indication of how to create a 3D game. I have no idea what the sequel is like but I also somehow own that too!
The game starts off simple enough letting you get a grasp of the game’s controls then you’re granted the ability to punch which will help you deal with enemies. You're able to easily adapt with the mechanics in this game and it trickles new abilities slowly, where it then proceeds to give you a level to use such abilities. You can find items and use them on enemy bosses. Very much like your typical Legend of Zelda games. Rayman is not perfect because when you get to the later stages the game becomes insanely hard and unfair as there is a slight delay with the controls and the game expects you to be some kind of pro with excellent concentration and reflexes. Like Bro ADHD exists😭.
It doesn’t help that there are obstacles that you cannot see coming and you have no way of avoiding them, don’t get me wrong I like this game but later levels are ridiculous. There are times where you will have to die just to memorise the patterns. Very much like Crash Bandicoot. Visuals are stunning. This game walked so cuphead could run. Animations are fantastic
Rayman stands out and that is saying a lot because the background can be a bit busy in some levels with dancing flowers in the forest to pencils falling in Picture City. The game still looks great considering it came out 22 years ago.
Rayman is a great game. I wouldnt say it's a must have or must play. It isnt something ill ever play again, as the game did start to aggravate me in later levels, but the beautiful visuals, fun gameplay and fantastic graphics are fun to experience.
