Summary

Resident Evil 2 is a sequel to the first Resident Evil title. Like the previous game in the series, Resident Evil 2 is a 3D action-adventure using three-dimensional polygon characters over two-dimensional pre-rendered backgrounds, with the action viewed through a variety of cinematic fixed camera angles in each room. Players can choose to play as one of two possible characters, each goes through the same initial scenario but with differences in the type of weaponry they find and the people they meet along the way.

Not difficult like previous games but, I like it. Puzzles are not to much pain in the ass, enemies also, but story was touchy.

Reasons why I think that this 1998 game is not only the greatest Resident Evil game ever mande, but also why the Resident Evil 2 Remake is a horrifically bad (no pun intended,) by comparison.

1. Overall Art & Atmosphere

- I needn't explain why retro games, despite having objectively worse graphics, can be more beautiful than these modern hyper-realistic games. RE2 (1998) is the perfect embodiment of what I mean when I refer to games as art paintings. From scene to scene or area to area, each frame could be snapshotted and hung on a museum wall; moreover, each frame surpasses the basic simplicities of nostalgia and our rose-tinted glasses; this singular verve, becomes an egnimatic piece of horror artistry and atmosphere, quite troubling and inexplicable to surmise—mostly as it pertains to the overall gaming experience. In saying that, I must acknowledge that nostalgia can indeed play a key role in its timelessness within gaming history—and too, that there's no shame admitting to its contribution, since, that is the glory we all seek in videogaming. Perhaps we can chalk it up to the fixed camera angles vitalizing it's canvas, or that the distancing of characters, models, details, and other settings give it a greater impasto and aura. Either way, RE2 (2019) greatly lacks this aloofness, that which keeps us guessing, or rather, dreaming about its scenarios. Practical (and perfect) for themes of a detective horror-mystery placed in a survival horror setup. Alas however, it seems they wished to replace these various iconic moments from the original with a more realistic and low-key approach for modern audiences. Meritable to a certain extent, but I wish remakes would have the guts to honor and improve on the original feeling—not to strip it entirely—as we will see will be the common trend. I truly believe RE2 (1998) to be perfectly executed in their atmospheric vision, I was left blindsided and aghast when I found that the new art direction in the 2019 version had tossed aside the original novelty and style, only to replace it with straightforward storytelling. There's no exaggeration here, it's just so much more blatantly different to me. I had been extremely disappointed when it released to say the least, but more examples are yet to come.

2. Era & Time Period

- RE2 (1998) was clearly a late 90s game. Not in the sense of how it was made on a technical stanpoint, but rather, the distinctive era specific details that pay homage to such things as late 90s police dramas and TV shows. What's evoked from this are sound effects that were so clearly inspired by police procedural audio, as in the menu navigation, cursor effects, and the general late 90s police-core, one that's stuck within an era of indistinguishable computer hardware. Why would the remake remove these distinctive and nostalgic sound effects that only enrich the story's cryptic nature; steered by its match-made-in-heaven zombie horror and time-specific detective techno thriller themes. Essentially, the 2019 version doesn't feel at all like it was set in 1998, which is only ascertained by NPC diaries—another tragic let down. I could go even further into minute details by critiquing Leon's wardrobe, it's newfound metropolitan setting, or the countless objects that litter the game's spaces.

3. Soundtrack

- I may be alone in thinking the original RE2 soundtrack to be the greatest video game score of all time. Yet, it's undoubtedly true that there are 0 excuses in removing the original save room theme. (GENUINELY PATHETIC) (and head scratching)

4. 21 years with no boss improvements

- Again, I may be alone in thinking that Resident Evil games would flourish if they adopted a souls-like philosophy to combat and boss fights. I picture no world where it wouldn't be a perfect companion to their already tight level design and heavy puzzle-mystery focus. Doubly intriguing when you consider the survival horror resource management aspect. The original had interesting boss fights because they were restricted to tank controls, making the intensity of it all the more heart-racing and dire. This was not well translated with the newer technical improvements we see in modern RE games (i.e. 1st or 3rd person).

5. Miscellaneous complaints concerning the remake

- the opening movie wasn't recreated.
- the Licker introduction was poorer.
- gun store guy was removed.
- the original voice acting is underrated considering the atmosphere (I'm also an advocate for the 1996 voice acting as well).
- what happened to Leon's rookie storyline? It was only briefly brushed upon and alluded to in the remake.
- remake is generally too easy.

Why remove the mystique? A new dev identity, some twenty years later, or a statement about its characters is not an acceptable answer.

A fantastic game and, in some parts, much better than the remake. It has a lot of content for a PS1 game, and it holds up well today
