Summary

Resident Evil is a survival horror classic in which a group of special forces agents, known as S.T.A.R.S, struggle against hordes of zombies and various other mutants in a mysterious mansion as they try to uncover the truth behind the terrifying infection. The gameplay environment consists of polygonal 3D characters placed over pre-rendered 2D backgrounds. As such, the game relies on pre-determined camera angles for a view of the action instead of a real-time camera like most games. The game is credited for coining the phrase "survival horror" and popularizing the genre.

Now that I’ve finally played the OG RE1, that means.. I’ve played the entire PS1 RE trilogy.

Played this one last as RE1 was a hard find to have hold on. But finally got my hands on a physical PS1 copy and here is my review of the game.

Honestly, it’s one of the best games ever created. It is the father of survivor horror, I think Resident Evil was the first to influence other survival horror games such as Silent Hill, Dead Space, Alan Wake, Last of Us.. etc.

The game starts, A Huge mansion filled with hundreds of rooms mutilated people and animals lurking around every corner, due the viral experiment gone wrong. The Spencer Mansion filled with traps and hidden keys and weopens to move further into the nighmare.

You can choose to control either Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine. The differences between both characters are more than superficial, with differences in abilities, items and even supporting characters, resulting in a slightly different scenario for both protagonists.

The graphics for the OG are still awesome to this day. I love the tank controls movements and the fixed camera angles are possibly the best part of this game as it makes the game more tense when dealing with enemies and you don’t know where they are because of the fixed camera angles. The game puts a strong emphasis on the survival aspect and forces players to strategize as there are limited items for everything like Chris has more health but only has 6 inventory slots whereas Jill has a little bit less health but has 8 inventory slots.

There is also the Item box that allows the you to deposit unwanted items such as key items that are not yet needed or weapons that are out of ammunition. All the item boxes are also interconnected meaning they carry the same items you put in no matter which one is accessed. Unlike Resident Evil 0 where there was no item box and you had to leave an item on the ground which was a pain in the ass.

This game has a soundtrack too like the hall of the mansion, save rooms etc.. phenomenal music!

The cheesy dialogue and voice acting despite its problems is actually pretty funny to endure and has a number of iconic lines including the "Jill Sandwich" line which cracks me up..

The selection of enemies are great too from zombies to zombie dogs to hunters to spiders to snakes and make.. great choices.

This game is overall amazing, don’t know why I didn’t play the original sooner but glad I did now nevertheless. Amazing game!

10/10!!!
