Donkey Kong Country is a side scrolling platformer by British developers Rare in 1994. It featured revolutionary pre-rendered 3D graphics that give the game a very unique look compared to most other games on consoles at the time. The two playable characters featured in the game are the titular character, Donkey Kong and his nephew, Diddy Kong. Together the two swing, climb, jump, swim, cartwheel, ride animals, and blast out of barrels on their way to recover their stolen bannanas from the evil King K. Rool and his Kremling army. The adventure takes you through a variety of different environments and levels that continually change up gameplay. Donkey Kong Country also provides plenty of opportunities for exploration with almost every level having a multitude of collectible, shortcuts, and hidden bonus areas.
On a dark and stormy night in Donkey Kong Island, Diddy Kong, Donkey Kong's nephew has taken the weighty responsibility of guarding DK's precious banana hoard for one night, as a part of his "hero training". DK entrusts Diddy with protecting the hoard until midnight, when he would be relieved, while DK himself goes to sleep as he is tired. Everything seems to go smoothly in the hoard until Diddy hears some noises. Diddy hears some voices outside and gets scared, asking who's there. King K. Rool, who had commanded his Kremling minions to steal the bananas. Two ropes drop from above and suddenly two Kritters appear. Diddy cartwheels them both easily, but then a Krusha (Klump in the instruction booklet) comes in as backup. As Diddy is not strong enough to defeat Krusha by himself, he is overpowered and defeated by the Kremling. The lizars seal Diddy inside a barrel and then throw it in the bushes. Donkey's grandfather, Cranky Kong, rushes inside the treehouse to tell Donkey Kong to wake up so he may tell him what happened. He then tells Donkey to check his Banana Cave. Donkey Kong is infuriated, exclaiming that the Kremlings will pay for stealing his banana hoard and kidnapping his little buddy. Donkey goes on to say that he will hunt every corner of the island for his bananas back.

I felt the need to revisit this classic since the sequel has been recently remade and I plan to buy it on the switch but felt the need to just revisit this before jumping to the Remake. This game just has some really unique graphics which probably were Mind blowing for the ancient folks back in the day. No that was not an ageist comment I swear however by today's standards it has aged a bit. Doesn't affect me I still love it never the less. The backgrounds look amazing when it comes to their details. So are the character models. I can criticise it by saying there should have been more background models but it's whatever. Some enemies look the same just recoloured if that was the issue today I would have roasted them but clearly making this game for the SNES must not have been a walk in the park so I shall not criticise it.
The level designs are fantastic, clearly a lot of thought and attention to detail was put into this game, the levels absolutely never felt the same. Apart from platforming levels through various locations there are also levels where you will have to swim which very much will make it impossible for you to attack someone in your path...well....stream? The most difficult ones are probably the levels where you have to jump on carts as you have to be super quick with your reflexes to avoid obstacles.
This can be very difficult as a game so saving is indeed vital and you must save as many times as you can ASAP. There are also hidden levels which I'm sure completionists will do their best to discover them. Side characters can also be there to help you and give you tips throughout the game. Cranky is probably the funniest side character as he will roast the fuck out of you throughout the game. Much like Mario, enemies have different mechanics as to how they can be defeated. Like you can't pick and choose it just increases the toxicity of the game's difficulty spikes, it can be punishing as If Diddy Kong gets injured you get punished and get a life taken from you. This game will require a lot of patience from you as you do need to memorise what you did wrong so you don't get punished the next time.
The game may not be long but it will feel long because you need time to memorise the mechanics. If this doesn't sound right for you avoid it, but if it is, you probably will go through all 9 stages of grief but the pay off will be chef's kiss
