Summary

The Space Pirates, merciless agents of the evil Mother Brain, have stolen the last Metroid from a research station, and once again Mother Brain threatens the safety of the galaxy! Samus Aran must don her awesome array of high-tech weaponry to retrieve the deadly Metroid hidden deep within the cave-riddled planet Zebes. Super Metroid features excellent graphics, with a huge variety of enemies and worlds to explore. The side-view action will be familiar to many players, only now there are new weapons and items, including the Grappling Beam, which allows Samus to swing across large chasms, and the X-Ray Scope, which reveals secret passages.

By far the best game of 1994, it was a blast exploring planet zebes fast as possible trying to find every item. The games atmosphere was incredible for a game of it's time as many of the games areas are dark and disturbing which is helped by the amazing music. The only part of the game which could have been better were the boss fights as the floaty movement doesn't mix well with getting direct hits on the fast paced bosses. Aside from that a must play SNES game.

Having been the third entry into the franchise that I played (after Zero Mission and Samus Returns), I was suprised to see how well it held up even against later entries. That being said, playing this after those other two, it didn't resonate with me as much as they did. While it had all the basics down (world design, combat, enemies, sound, etc), the controls weren't as tight as the other titles. Granted, this game came out before them, I couldn't help but notice these differences. What really made this one specifically stand out, though, were the boss fights--especially the final boss. Each fight felt cinematic and epic, really testing the skills I had acquired up to that point. All in all, I had fun and it was interesting to see another step in the Metroid timeline.
