Summary

The Outer Worlds is a new single-player sci-fi RPG from Obsidian Entertainment and Private Division. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter a host of factions all vying for power, who you decide to become will determine the fate of everyone in Halcyon. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable.

Played all missions including both DLCs with the Spacer's Choice (PS5) edition.

I first picked this game up when it initially launched in 2019. I played about 2 hours of it, got bored and didn't touch it again. However this being one of my favourite settings (intergalactic futurism) I always wanted to give it a second chance.

2023 they released a next gen upgrade (with a lot of it's own problems), however to me this was an excuse to play this again.

A lot of people were disappointed with this game as they were expecting New Vegas in space. And while there are many similar design aspects to fallout new Vegas, this game is more like Mass Effect where the deepness of the systems and dialogue come from your companions rather than the world itself. Coming into this game with that mindset, I enjoyed it a lot.

This game is also a parody of hypercapitalsm which is a premise I usually enjoy. The humor is somewhat similar to something you'd see in Ratchet and Clank where everything is corporate, where there's usually a joke about having insurance and medical in uncanny settings.

I also played both DLCs. The first one (Peril on Gorgon) was probably the worst part of the entire game. On the extreme other end, the 2nd DLC (murder or Erandos) was one of the best parts of the game.

There are a lot performance issues with the next gen versions so I'd wait until it's fixed, as they devs have mentioned they are working towards this.

I will definitely give this game a full 2nd playthrough sometime in the future (when hopefully all performance issues are fixed).

I'm very tempted to give this a nine because the highs are so high, but an eight is fitting. What makes this game so good really is its setting and it's story. There is a very intricate story here that takes time to develop, but only develops once you allow it too. You have control on how much of the story you can learn. You can easily just do the quests and be on your way, but to experience the greatness of this game, you need to explore everything, interact with all the characters, learn things about them and ultimately act how you want the story to play out. Your choices actually have a meaning. The choices aren't meaningless and aren't as cut and dry as games like the telltale games feel (not saying those are bad, they fit that style). The story can play out in so many scenarios here, and the only way to know what the different outcome can eventually be, you need to learn about the world and see what the potential paths lie ahead of you. What holds this back for me is the gunplay a bit. It's not inherently bad, it's honestly kind of fun in small bits and portions, but there just isn't any rhyme or reason to it. It serves as a means to an end and nothing more. Other games use combat as a sense of progression or as a core part of the game, but its not here. Frankly there's more meat on the bone with the dialog options here, which is fine at the end of the day because the best part of this game really is learning about this world for yourself and just putting yourself in all these different situations. I can honestly say I have never played a videogame like this before

I couldn't even play this. It was so dull, everything about it was so lifeless and fake. It felt like the disneyland ride version of a movie.

Played on: Playstation 4 (Standard)
Version: Playstation 4
Edition: Physical

Sold thus one prematurely because I wanted something else at the time. I hope to get it back in the future. I didn't get insanely far into this one but I was enjoying it for the most part. It was miles better than any of the Fallout titles imo. Very good world building & felt fresh within its story & gameplay.

Final verdict: Wait for a sale
