Now, don't get me wrong, this game Is definitely far from perfect, and it still doesn't meet the expectations it claims to offer compared to its red, fat italian rival, but Sonic 2, unlike the first one, is an actual decent game.
Someone must have told the team behind the first game that, once past Green Hills, the whole idea of going fast was completely destroyed, because now the game will actually let you sprint for much more time without costantly killing you off for trying to do what the game used to advertise. There still are some slower zone, but everything it's much more balanced and doesn't get annoying as much as it did in the first game.
My only complaint is that some zones in the middle of the game still have a very questionable level design, which still isn't Sonic forte. Despite being better than Sonic 1, there is still much more work to do to actually achieve a good game design overall; levels are now way too big and dispersive, to the point where I did find myself confused about what I was even doing in lots of levels, actually questioning myself if I was proceeding towards the goal of going back to the beginning.
On a scale from 0 to 10, I'd say the way levels play here Is a solid 7. They aren't bad, they are a bit more than just ok, but they aren't even that good.
That said, the game ks still pretty unfair, to the point where ragequits are pretty common for the player. The final boss in particular is a PAIN. IN. THE. ASS.
The soundtrack is good and the graphics are actually insane, probably some of the best I've ever seen in a 16-bit game. The Casino Night Zone was truly magnificent, and Chemical Plant Zone was also very good looking.
I also liked the final stages quite a lot, as they reminded me of Mario Bros 3's Bowser flying ships, despite still not being as good as them.
I would'ne never expected to praise a Sonic game so soon, but here we are. It still isn't that much of a good game (Hey, I must remain the Sonic Hater I am, right?), it's not even that bad. I think I could even go for a second run, sometimes in the future. A distant future. But definitely a possibile one.
Oh yeah and FUCK YOU TAILS YOU'RE A FUCKING USELESS BITCH
