Summary

God of War: Ascension, the seventh instalment in the God of War series, acts as a prequel to the preceding games. The narrative revolves around Kratos, the protagonist from earlier instalments, who was once a loyal servant of the God of War, Ares. Tricked by Ares into unknowingly murdering his own family, Kratos breaks the blood oath binding him to Ares and abandons his former master. Subsequently, Kratos finds himself imprisoned and must navigate a path to freedom, severing the bond between him and Ares. The game retains the familiar hack-and-slash combat system of its predecessors, featuring Kratos wielding the Blades of Chaos. However, a new addition, the World Weapon system, allows Kratos to wield various weapons. Additionally, Kratos can now acquire up to four magical disciplines—Fires of Ares, Ice of Poseidon, Lightning of Zeus, and Soul of Hades—each bestowing unique abilities and imbuing his weapon with magic. For instance, the Ice of Poseidon enables underwater breathing. Rage, a recurring feature, undergoes modifications; it accumulates through attacks, and when the bar is full, it automatically unleashes until the player ceases attacking or sustains damage. Three new relics provide Kratos with the ability to manipulate time, create a "shadow" self, and dispel illusions crafted by his guardians. Notably, God of War: Ascension introduces online multiplayer to the series. Players, before engaging in multiplayer battles, align with one of four gods—Ares, Hades, Zeus, or Poseidon—each offering a distinct set of abilities. As players accumulate experience and level up their warriors, they unlock magical abilities, armour, weapons, relics, and other treasures. The game features four distinct multiplayer modes: Team Favor of the Gods, Match of Champions, Trial of the Gods, and Capture the Flag

Possibly the best looking in the franchise. Well worth playing if you missed it (which I did). Challenging and cathartic set pieces make up for the somewhat weak story. Memorable characters and enemies though.

I'd say this game is more of a 8.5, but I'll give it a 9 here. This game feels different enough from the other older god of war games while retaining what makes those games feel special. The most striking thing in this game are definitely the visuals. From the first moment I opened this up to play it I couldn't believe this was a ps3 game. It genuinely looks incredible. God of war games always had pretty extravagant settings, and these graphics really make them feel special. These extremely gorgeous visuals also make this game the most brutal and gorey game from the original formula. The gameplay is mostly the same as any other classic god of war, but the addition of the sub weapons give it a nice little change of pace that the gameplay needs at times. While although the story isn't the high point of this particular game, it definitely has its moments in the latter half. The story more so comes together when having played all God of war games, being a nice addition to help round out and tie in the Greek mythology portion of Kratos' journey together. The main issue is the framerate, it is mostly stable during combat which is the most important part, but it definitely isn't incredible and drops surprisingly in exploration. It's not a huge issue for me as I got accustomed to it pretty quickly, but for those of you who need 60+ fps don't play this on a ps3. One stupid thing here is that it only has autosave, so no save points. So be careful not to shut of during the autosave or you can corrupt your file which will suck. I will add here to finish to chose your difficulty wisely, as you can't change it throughout the game, and the final section before the boss is an absolute pain, so if you're not a veteran of the genre do not give yourself the hassle of the harder difficulty and ruin your experience for no reason.

The weakest God of War game by far but by no means a bad game. While suffering from a subpar story, an over emphasis on epic set pieces that can lead to confusion during gameplay and some minor technical issues, the core hack & slash game play is still fun and the game still looks great for its age.
