I took my dang time with this one. Love me a handheld version cuz I really picked this up and put it down on the go a LOT. This was my work break game. It made grinding in this game bearable. At least the parts where I had to, this story really does flow really well… until chapter 6.

I loved the passing the torch from character to character aspect until bringing the band together went down. Everyone’s individual story had me hooked and it was a lot of fun to understand each characters role based on their background. Truly enjoyed that. He ended up being my least used character, but the shop owner Torneko had to be my fav part of the games mini stories. He loves his family and wants the best for him so we works a job, and you DO THAT. You take him to work, you sell weapons to travelers, and then you do a little questing on the side before you get pulled into a tunnel digging dispute storyline. I’d play a whole game of that honestly.

The story started to drag a little, or at least felt winded by the time everyone was together. Lots of grinding, lots of unnecessary bosses that really didn’t do much for the story or connection to any characters except for the games main villain. But the DS versions 3D models of some of these bigger bosses was so cool to see. Loved all the 3D visuals in this game actually, it really added a little more flavor to this already engaging 2D JRPG.

Final area was a boss rush sequence and the final boss was a real pain!! My Hero didn’t even live! It was all Maya and Ragnar pulling the weight 😂 was so thrilled to see him go down.

Love me a dragon quest tho and it’s good chill time games. Easy to kick back, enjoy some loose story and grind some XP. Recommended for those who love a game while on the train or waiting to go to work.

This game does hold a special place in my heart as it got me into Jrpgs. But it's a bit jank and grindy, and while I like the whole chapter stratcure, I don't love it at a certain point I just wished I could start the hero's journey. But it does make the game stand out. Also it would be wrong not to mention the batshit insane final boss that's equal parts frustrating and fair. All and all, not a bad place to start my rpg journey.
