Summary

Deceived by the forces of evil into prematurely bringing about the end of the world, War – the first Horseman of the Apocalypse – stands accused of breaking the sacred law by inciting a war between Heaven and Hell. In the slaughter that ensued, the demonic forces defeated the heavenly hosts and laid claim to the Earth. Brought before the sacred Charred Council, War is indicted for his crimes and stripped of his powers. Dishonored and facing his own death, War is given the opportunity to return to Earth to search for the truth and punish those responsible. Hunted by a vengeful group of Angels, War must take on the forces of Hell, forge uneasy alliances with the very demons he hunts, and journey across the ravaged remains of the Earth on his quest for vengeance and vindication.

Darksiders is an action-adventure game in its pure form, with some obvious but good inspirations from series such as Legend of Zelda and God of War. You play as one of the horsemen of the apocalypse, which is such a cool premise, and it delivers on it quite well.

The lore, narrative, and characters of this series are highly creative and interesting to learn about, like you have a character always stuck with you that is voiced by Mark Hamil of all people, the Cyberpunk 2077 of the past. The story is great, but the ending is a cliffhanger that the series still did not address three entries later, which does sour the moment in retrospect. War himself is a certified badass, with the addition of an excellent voice choice and great acting. You can't not smile when he throws one-liners and doesn't take shit from any character he meets. Maybe, retrospectively, this can be a little too edgy at times, but I would consider this to be the good type of edgy that gives the game the sense of which era this game was made in.

Gameplay is your classic action-adventure with a combo meter, but the game doesn't really have good combo variety, making you spam the same attacks over and over again. With some side weapons thrown into the mix, it is bearable, but it does get exhausting. There is a heavy focus on puzzles, which I do enjoy; unlike its sequel, the length of the game does not overstay its welcome, so personally I didn't get tired of them. What brings the game down a peg is the rather often backtracking required by the story at times, especially during a later part of the game.

In the end, Darksiders is a pretty good game and the start of an excellent series. I recommend giving it a try.

Fucking finally beat it. Fuck the puzzles and fuck the tower that place sucks ass shit literally becomes a doctor strange simulator. Fine game tho. The overly serious tone conflicts with the fun art style. Fuck the music too needs metal and rock and roll

Generic god of war style slasher. No drama, no intrigue, protagonist looks like warcraft overlord, but has 0 charisma, even npc have more personality. Combat is very primitive 2 combos, 3 weapons, 4 skills, about 3 attacks per weapon, there are also extra equips, but you barely will ever use them, they mostly used for puzzles, everything does really low damage, the most effective way to dispose of enemy is to use cast skill and basic combo or just skip battle. There are a lot of annoying flying enemies, but only middle range or very weak ranged weapons. I played on hardest difficulty, it definitely affected enemies strength, but not their HP. Bosses and world exploration is the only interesting aspect of the game. Though bosses can literally remove all your HP bars in few hits, but very easy to kill, you learn patterns fast and it takes only few tries, because there are some op skills or rather 2 skills actually. Puzzles sometimes easy, sometimes very annoying, mostly platformer style or require to use some goofy mechanics. I had only 2 hard puzzles, spent like few hours trying to solve them, because there was no any visual or logical hint, literally solve it from 1st try but couldn't figure out where to go next, and it was some tiny hole in the ground, hidden beneath some environment structure. So yeah... There are a lot of collectibles, but most of them require you to revisit area with abilities obtained in the future and honestly it's not worth it, just finish the story and uninstall it, game is very exhausting to play.

Absolutely love this game, I have a soft spot for religious imagery (including angels, demons, and horsemen), and rpgs in general, so this game was right up my alley. I love this game so much.
