Summary

The Evil Within is an action survival horror game that draws inspiration from the Resident Evil series with a grimy look with exaggerated gore. The game was directed by Shinji Mikami, the creator of Resident Evil & a former Resident Evil 4 director. You must navigate through the hostile game world with limited resources, this requires to use your wits to survive and correctly manage your resources as you encounters various terrors and dangers throughout the game. The environments may also change without warning in real-time based on your actions, adding more variables to the game.

So first of all, this game.... frustrates me.... A LOT💀 During certain moments but-
Its like-
All the frustration isnt enough to keep me away. It makes me so angry XD but not angry at the game, angry at what I'm facing. It was interesting. Idk if I'd compare their enemy constructs as good as the ones you'd see in silent hill but, it still did good ^-^

I gotta say tho.... hearing that song? That.... MELODY? WHAT. IS. THAT.... MMMELODY!? Yeah that melody? ;-; if you play the game, you'll know exactly which one. It calms tf outta me 💀 no matter how stressful or chaotic the game got, the second I heard that tune, all was fine :,) and her voice? Good lord her voice :,) it was the icing on the cake :,) Both tunes entwined together were my safe heaven :,) you may or may not relate but :,) that's how it was for me.

This was INCREDIBLY bland & I had had zero interest in it. Not one time did this game give me any sort of tension which that in itself is a complete failure considering that the game is built on said experience.

The characters are non existent, the graphics look like launch graphics for the Playstation 3, & the "scary" elements are hilarious. There is a man walking around with a chainsaw stalking you in the early part of the game & I could have cared less. That is pathetic.

I made it about an hour & quit. I'm going to die one day, I refuse to waste time on things I don't like even in the slightest. Also, did they record their voice work on the Motorola Razor? My oath. It sounds HORRIFIC. Maybe that was the scary part? Hmm.

Final verdict: Don't touch it

Great game. The beginning is scary, but it wears off.

Note: playthrough on Steam Deck, experienced no problems but be aware that others have reported that the Steam version is relatively unstable on Windows.

The Evil Within, while it has nice moments sprinkled throughout, just falls short of what I wanted it to be. The story goes from mysterious, to fun to an unsatisfying ending with a lot of loose ends. I understand this is to setup dlc, but the base game should be able to tell a satisfying story on it's own. Most of the game you're fighting standard 'zombie' enemies, I would've loved if the game could've been a little more creative there. The gameplay is very standard by the books third person shooter with stealth elements and upgrades.

All on all, this plays like a mid tier Resident Evil game. Never going as low as the worst in that series, but never reaching the heights either.
