Summary

Pokemon XD is a sequel to the role-playing game Pokémon Colosseum. You'll play as Michael, a Pokémon trainer who is trying to thwart the evil Cipher. Cipher plans to control the world by using the powerful, but unpredictable, shadow Pokémon. Now you must fight back by collecting your own shadow Pokémon and beating Cipher's goons in battle. Pokémon XD also lets you import Pokémon from Game Boy Advance Pokémon games and participate in head-to-head battles with other players.

A small improvement on the first game. With the exception of maybe two or three locations and the addition of Poke Spots, all the locations are the same as its predecessor. You can still only play as a male character with no customisation options, and instead of starting with Umbreon and Espeon, you start with only one low-level Eevee that you can level up and choose how to evolve.

There are about twice as many shadow Pokemon in this game than the first (Colosseum has over 40, this one has over 80), and there’s at least the option to catch additional Pokemon via bait/snacks left at the Poke Spots. The Shadow Pokemon in this game also have more diversity in their move sets so they can actually be used somewhat strategically.

The story runs for over 20 hours but there isn’t much to do in the post-game other than finishing a couple of different colosseums and catching/purifying any mons you missed during the story. Once you've purified every mon (soft spoiler ahead) all you get is congratulations from a few characters and an extra short cutscene before the credits roll, which isn't all that rewarding. At least the first game had Ho-Oh as a reward.

The addition of a Shadow-specific design in Lugia is the coolest thing the game has to offer. The first game definitely should have had something like this. Considering you only see Shadow Lugia in the opening and ending cut scenes is a bit of a disappointment though, and once you purify it, the Shadow design is lost.

I want to play it again. It was the best Pokémon game to date, in my opinion.

One of my fav childhood games that I’ve replayed multiple times, arguably better than many mainstream Pokémon games.
