Summary

Revisit the Sinnoh region and the story of the Pokémon Pearl Version game Experience the nostalgic story from the Pokémon Pearl Version game in a reimagined adventure, Pokémon Shining Pearl, now on the Nintendo Switch system! Adventures in the Pokémon Shining Pearl game will take place in the familiar Sinnoh region. Rich in nature and with mighty Mount Coronet at its heart, Sinnoh is a land of many myths passed down through the ages. You’ll choose either Turtwig, Chimchar, or Piplup to be your first partner Pokémon and then set off on your journey to become the Champion of the Pokémon League. Along the way, you’ll be able to encounter the Legendary Pokémon Palkia. Adventure together with the Pokémon that appeared in the Pokémon Pearl Version game. Players of the original games can revisit familiar places and relive familiar scenes, while first time players can enjoy plenty of fun encounters and surprises that the Sinnoh region has to offer. The original story and the scale of the Sinnoh region’s towns and routes have been faithfully reproduced. This remake has also been revitalized with some of the player-friendly features of modern Pokémon games and up-close-and-personal Pokémon battle scenes. Whether you played Pokémon Diamond Version or Pokémon Pearl Version back in the day or you’re encountering these games for the first time, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

This is so difficult to review. in some ways essentially not a remake but the exact same game. The additions/ironing out of QOL improvements do make this the definitive version, I'd argue even over platinum, but this is so disappointing. the chibi art style isn't inherently a problem, but if you compare it to Links Awakening for the switch it's night and day- BDSP doesn't have the graphical chops to support its decidedly meh art style. I don't think it meshes well with the mystical time of the story/setting.

That said, the game it is based off is amazing and in a way so is BDSP. Sinnoh is still fantastic to get lost in. As I was playing I realised I wasn't getting nostalgia for the original, I essentially WAS playing the original. There's nothing inherently **bad** about BDSP but there is a lot **wrong** with it.

IMO this game should've been a graphical push for the Switch- it looks like trash compared to the far more beautiful BOTW, Mario Odyssey, and Metroid Dread (the latter two of which run in 60fps). For god's sake this console can run Doom Eternal!!!

Began veeeery slow. Until the first major plot point it's a snooze fest. But after that it gets a little better. The only challenging part was the final tournament which wasn't a tournament perse but very difficult either way. Was very disappointed that there wasn't a duel between the legendary pokemons like in Sword and Shield. That's why at best, it's a 7 out of 10 game.

When I saw the reveal, it broke my heart. It felt like an abomination. I was expecting a Let's go Pikachu style remake, but this chibi style 'remake' infuriated me so much. Nevertheless, I wanted to try it, and I did. It wasn't as bad as I expected. The gameplay is fun and made it easier to ignore the chibi artstyle. Plus, the quality of life improvements are amazing. They're a life saver! Exploring Sinnoh and catching Pokémon from the region did make me smile.

However, I don't care about the graphics of Pokémon games, but holy shit, it's trash compared to the standards of the Switch! Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which released 10 YEARS AGO, looks graphically superior, and it was on the 3DS! It even made me want to play Platinum again. The worst part is that once again, we didn't get the Battle Frontier!

Now, when we're finally getting great to perfect remakes, here we are with The Pokémon Company and Game Freak giving us a lazy attempt and a cheap cash grab for a 'remake'. The chibi style completely ruined the game, and they made it comparatively easier as well. Game Freak should have developed it themselves instead of outsourcing it. They should have given it the proper treatment it deserved and created a perfect remake.
