Summary

Join Mario and his new companion Olivia on a comedic adventure that will take you to the far corners of a papercraft world in Paper Mario: The Origami King on Nintendo Switch! Face off against the Origami King and his army of paper invaders, team up with some extraordinary companions and master magical powers on your quest to save the world. Unwrap an epic quest! Travel the land, repair the damage done by the Folded Soldiers and rescue Toads trapped in all manner of wacky scrapes! With the help of Olivia’s paper-folding powers, use the far-reaching 1,000 Fold Arms and other paper transformations to save those imprisoned by the Origami King’s henchmen, and help restore peace to the world. Put a stop to King Olly's plans by engaging in battles which will put both your tactical thinking and puzzle solving skills to the test – against his origami army, as well as humongous bosses under his command!

This is a game with a lot personality and nice set pieces and design. The world is definitely the best part of the game here, with a lot of things to do on your journey, with something in or about the world always catching your eye leading you to do something either big or small. This is really satisfying and makes this game feel like an actual journey you're taking part in. This however is hindered by the combat system. Although novel and unique, it isn't a sustainable system for a whole game. I can appreciate the novelty, and if its design were to have been a small portion of the game my opinion of it wouldn't be as sour, but as the only possibility for combat, it gets annoying fast. Rather than simply make your way through the world on your adventure, you constantly remind yourself to try and avoid any encounters, and it quickly becomes the first thing that's always on your mind when you play. The combat is not a complete turn off here, but it makes it that you have to see and appreciate the good done outside the combat system and stomach the bad to enjoy this game as a whole. And although that sounds like too much work to enjoy a game, I do believe at one point or another it is worth it to play as it really does have its moments to really shine

The art direction is admirable, the gameplay on the other hand is lacking and feels like a bad decision..

I'd love to see a more refined paper mario in the future.

In general, despite what many user reviews on sites like Metacritic may say, for my first time playing a Paper Mario game, I enjoyed myself, and although it wasn’t the most riveting of experiences, I do not regret giving the game my time. It isn’t the type of game to leave you jumping off your seat for years to come, but it is an experience I am glad I had and something I feel was an enjoyable time overall despite some glaring issues.

A smarter game than the two previous ones, with nicely written characters and situations. The gameplay core still remains less interesting than the first entries and this is getting honestly tiring
