Summary

Experience the critically acclaimed masterpiece with its renowned Sumi-e ink art style in breathtaking high resolution. Take on the role of Amaterasu, the Japanese sun goddess who inhabits the form of a legendary white wolf, on a quest to defeat Orochi, an eight-headed demon and tyrannical monster responsible for turning the world of Nippon into a ruined wasteland.

Okami HD is nothing short of a masterpiece. This game is so unique in the action/adventure genre even with being heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda series. I have now beaten both this game, and it's sequel, and I'm just going to say, they are beautiful. You can really never go wrong with Okami. I played this game a lot when I was younger on the Wii, but I didn't know the slightest bit of what to do. I just ran around doing what I thought was fun at the time, and never got close to beating it. Now, I can say proudly that I've beaten the game and loved every bit of it.

Okami HD is truly breathtaking, both visually, and in it's story and soundtrack. The remastered graphics are fantastic. Going back to the original version is pretty hard now that I've played the remaster, though that isn't really a bad thing. Okami deserves more credit than it's given, and more players than it has. It's story is both unique and full of character. From the characters, to the adventures, to the side-quests, to the landscapes you traverse through, it's all unique, and there will most likely never be a game that has what Okami has to offer (did I mention the story is nearly 30 hours?). The soundtrack is by far among the best soundtracks I've ever heard, right next to, maybe even surpassing Celeste's gorgeous soundtrack. I'd buy this game for the soundtrack alone if I didn't know the game itself was good. That's just how good it is.

If you've never played Okami, you're in for a treat. If you have played Okami, but haven't played the HD remaster, you're in for a treat. If you've already beaten this version, go play the sequel (OkamiDen) if you can get your hands on it, as it is fairly rare.

Genuinely one of the greatest games of all time. I had a blast going through this game.

Progressive Review

Current Save File Area: Tsuta Ruins

Pre-Note:
So since the sequel has been announced, this franchise has cought my attention. This will also be my first playthrough of a game on a Nintendo Switch, since I find this to be the perfect opertunity as I'm on vacation.

Note 1:
Right off the bat, the artstyle is giving me some old Naruto game vibes I used to play so its giving me a hint of nostalgia. As I love Japanese mythology and folklore, the setting of the game is right up my ally. I appreciate the story telling at the beginning to give me an overall understanding of the world I'm going to explore. I find the narrative choice very interesting, as it's taking the player to relive a legendary tale and puts them in the same spot as the clueless villagers that are just confused as I am. They get a deja vu feeling when I approach them, yet they don't accept the fact that this could be a retelling of a tale, which I'm not fully sold on as I feel there's something even deeper behind the awakening of Amaterasu.

First impressions:
- Even tho this is an older generation game, I'm pleased that there's different camera settings which imo flow nicely together (unlike a certain Mario game).
- The brush I find a nice interactive and immersive touch that's also a part of the story. It's a bit wonky to use in combat tho.
- After a few minutes I needed to turn off the dialogue volume. I'm sorry but replacing voice acting with mumbling is annoying as hell.
- I was pleasantly surprised that there's a night and day cycle that changes the interactions in the village, feels like that's a "ahead of its time" feature they implemented, also adds immersion.

Note 2:
There's a euphoric and relaxing feeling this game gives me when getting a new ability or achieving a goal that makes an area blossom. The same feeling a game like Ghost of Tsushima or FF7 would give me with the beauty of the visuals and the soundtrack working hand in hand. As I unlock more brush techniques the game invites you into more puzzles and general activities you can do when exploring, which adds more to the immersion. In this instance I've also realized that this is a perfect nintendo switch game, as you can just pick it up and play on the go or wherever and whenever you feel like it. You can get a an immersive session in and effortlessly jump back at a later point during the day aswell.

Note 3:
I appreciate how the game moves forward, by exploring you move on with the story and unlock new areas to basically heal the world. I also fought my first real boss fight, the spider queen. Can't say I'm not surprised I didn't fight a boss sooner but in hindsight it makes sense, as the boss fight implemented the new abilities I unlocked, which therefore made it more thoughtful and interactive. I also like how once you defeat a certain evil it doesn't just dissappear, instead it blossoms and heals the surrounding area.
