Summary

James Cameron's Avatar: The Game is the official video game based on the highly anticipated film James Cameron's Avatar.

It was nice to experience live pandora. Especially like the scene where i can choose to play as human or as avatar.

This isn't half bad, for a movie tie-in. Probably the coolest thing about it is the split scenarios whether you choose to side with the colonialist RDA, or the indigenous Na'vi. This has a pretty big effect on what kind of game you play—a 3rd person shooter with lots of vehicles, or a melee-focused action game with tameable wildlife. The mechanics are pretty bog-standard but still enjoyable, with equipable abilities on cooldown, and a decent selection of weapons. There's a super rudimentary leveling system that auto-equips the new best items upon level-up, which I super didn't like. They did a shockingly good job at translating Pandora to a video game. The locations are stunningly realized and accurate to the film. The narrative itself is pretty threadbare, and nothing will really make any sense if you haven't seen the film (even though it came out before the film?). There's also some pretty unlore-friendly (like Ryder casually becoming Toruk Makto only a year before Jake arrives), so I think it's pretty fair to say that this isn't canon. One of the biggest surprises was the Conquest mini-game, which you has you bolstering units and defenses and strategically attacking enemy territories for resources on a planet-wide map. This also you gives you small incremental buffs for the base-game, which is super cool. As the only major video game set in Cameron's universe as of now, this is a fun excuse to dip back into its universe.

A massively disappointing game, considering it was from the movie franchise that i really like. The graphics were okay for its time. Very repetitive gameplay and it felt like you could hardly go anywhere which is strange considering Pandora is such a huge place, Very poor game.

Edition: Standard physical

Cool for the time & when I played (2019) it was oddly difficult. Either way, it was cool to be in Pandora. Unfortunately there wasn't a lot of things in it that kept me invested enough. Still cool it exists though & even more, it's not a total dumpster fire.

Final verdict: Wait for a sale
