Before I start my review, I would like to point out that I will be talking about the PS2 version of the game, not the next gen one.

One thing I like to say quite often is to not understimate children's game and/or games with focus towards kids (yes, those are different things), it's not because it's a children's game that it's going to be laughable for an adult. With that said, let's talk about Disney's Toy Story 3.

The game has a Story Mode which retells some events of the movie, it is presented on a book and the narrator tells a little bit about what the episode is going to be about. Each and every episode has 100 stars to collect, which are usually not hard to find since they path your way into the level and some are stored in some ABC cubes you must break to reveal them, and there's also two secondary optional goals, one is to grab 8 collectibles hidden around the map and the other is to make something, for example, "find a way to turn off the car lights" or in later episodes "do not die until certain point". The Story Mode is incredibly simple, easy and short. The puzzles are pretty simple and obvious for the most part, the platforming is also pretty basic and the combat is basically nonexistent, there is no enemy in this game. The only real "enemies" you'll encounter, and by that I mean "ways you can die" are adults that are present in some levels, and you have to stealthily go around them in order for them not to catch you, or just completely avoid. Or by falling too high on the ground or falling off the level, like off a ledge or something. Again, there is NO enemy in this game, the "Combat" button is only ever used for breaking the aforementioned ABC boxes and maybe for solving some puzzles here and there, but nothing too complex.

Once you beat a level, you get two other challenges that can be done in the same level, one is a Time Trial Mode which you have to complete the level as fast as you can, which is fun but pretty easy. The other challenge is to break all of the ABC boxes in a different exclusive area of the level with a certain amount of time, and there's only ONE level that the time is unforgiving - by the way, not every level has the ABC challenge.

Once you got through Story Mode, you'll probably notice some points you earned throughout your journey, and those points are your game currency, used to buy extras from the Extras menu in the Hub Area, but we'll talk about that later.

The more you progress through the game, the more minigames you unlock, there's 3 of them. The first one you have to play as Woody and Bullseye, avoiding obstacles and enemies along the way, kinda like that Dino game from Google Chrome (but more complex) - also, there's a section of each level which you have to press the correct button to knock off some enemies on screen, they don't do damage to you though (not that I remember at least). The game is presented as a 2D autoscroller with a 1940s black and white filter. The real challenge here is getting the Platinum reward, because in order to do that, you have to progress through the level without dying a single time, which can be quite challenging.

The second minigame, we play as Buzz and we'll have to progress through the levels until we meet and beat Zorg. It is a nice 3D platforming section, where combat is really a part of it and NOW we have enemies to defeat properly. Buzz can perform two types of attack, the square button makes him punch and slide kick, and the triangle button makes him shoot lasers (you can hold it too). Again, for the Platinum reward you must beat the level without dying once, and that one is the most difficult challenge in this game. The platforming is just right on the difficulty, the enemies are quite unforgiving, you have to time it properly your attacks to not take damage. There's also an autoscroller section in each level which tests your reflexes and the later ones are brutal but really nice and fun.

The last minigame is the best, and we only have two levels in it... In this minigame we explore the mechanics presented in a level in Story Mode where we control 3 aliens in different paths, you can switch between them to solve different puzzles and to make the aliens progress through the level. It is not hard but it is a really fun concept, in my opinion. The Platinum here is to switch through your aliens the least amount of time possible, and it could be quite tricky, since you have to kinda learn the level and find a way to not waste any switches.

Now finally, we'll talk about the Extras section of the game. Remember the collectibles in each and every level? Well, when you collect all 8 in a level, you'll unlock them in the hub area. So, the second level features a set of 8 light bulbs, if you collect them all, they'll light up the hub area and so on. It is a charming little detail but doesn't feel as rewarding. But what about the Extras menu? Here you can find high-res pics of the main characters of the game, for some reason. Concept art (as usual) and cheats, which some of them are just for the laughs, there's also nice stuff such as invincibility (which is not really necessary in this game).

Overall, I know this is supposed to be a kids friendly game, but I played through much better children's game that offers a balance between being challenging and accessible. I played this game as a kid and I remember mocking it every day possible because of how stupidly easy it was and because of the lack of combat, you can beat this game in a few hours. Still, I was dumb enough to not figure out where every collectible was, but regardless. I know this is a children's game but I don't think it holds up that well, even for a kid. The game pictures the story quite well and the characters + levels have good designs, but it is quite boring. The only real good parts of the game can be found only on the minigames section.

I haven't played the next gen version yet, but I'm aware that it is a completely different game. Still, if you want to give this game a shot for yourself, go ahead, but I don't recommend, you're not missing anything, I promise.
