Summary

The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening is a remake of the 1993 game of the same name. Besides the complete graphical and sound overhaul, its gameplay controls have been changed to incorporate the additional buttons the Switch holds as opposed to the 2-button choice of the Game Boy. The overworld map is far more detailed and specific locations can now be marked to be returned to on a later occasion. Additional heart-pieces can also be won, extending the heart meter to a total of 20 instead of the 14 hearts of the original.

This game was quite a joy to play. When I was a kid, even though I enjoyed them, the Zelda games that fell outside of the main Triforce/Ganondorf conflict always felt a bit like awkward stepchildren to me, except for this game. This game is a blast from start to finish and this remake enhances that in pretty much every way. Although there is something to be said about the aesthetic choice this game goes for and how strongly it departs from the originals style, there’s no denying the game is absolutely stunning visually. The gameplay too is tight, fun and exciting. Puzzles and interesting combat encounters are a plenty within this game and the dungeons and items are varied and interesting. The real standout is the story, it’s Twin Peaks inspired setting and themes mixed with traditional Zelda charm makes for a world that is fascinating as much as it is mysterious, with an ending that has always stayed with me. Play this game, one of the best experiences you can have on the switch.

A colourful and visually gorgeous touch-up of a classic, but one that retains the clunky and outdated mechanics and puzzles of a bygone era.

One of the first games in a long time that I've needed to use YouTube guides to complete. Archaic at best.

I had a lot of fun and enjoyed this game a lot. This game was a big childhood favorite of mine, and I was happy to see it remade on the Switch. So much nostalgia playing this! Classic Zelda at its finest! Hopefully one day they remake the Oracle series.

Credit goes to Nintendo for making such a complex game for the GameBoy. The remake looks fantastic on the Switch. It is the definitive way to experience this adventure.
For the most part, the dungeons and world are cool to explore.
A lot of back and forth, but I guess that's the charm. Better than having empty open-world areas. Make sure to use the map markers to better coordinate yourself.
One problem I have is that some parts feel unintuitive. The level 3 dungeon had one treasure that required enemies to be defeated from other areas. No owl statue hinted that.
My other problem is the Switch performance. This game is clearly unoptimized in certain areas. Only one patch was released, which is lame.

If this was a brand new game, I would rate it a 7/10. I'm giving some grace since it's a Game Boy release.

This is IMHO the best looking Zelda game of all time, and I mean it! It's like playing a miniature world. Despite graphical prowess, the game is a lot of fun, the dungeons are pure old school Zelda goodness! I loved it! Unfortunately it's too short, but being a Game Boy game originally, that's fine too.
