Summary

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins is a platforming game for the Game Boy and the sequel to Super Mario Land. It also marks the debut of Mario's self-proclaimed arch rival Wario, who would later become a recurring character in the Mario series as well as a protagonist in his own series. The game features new graphics, power-ups, challenges, and a completely original storyline.

This one is much more fun compared to it's predecessor. It is more graphically advanced for sure and has more levels consisting of 6 zones, and each zone has different amount of levels. Each zone can have 1 or 2 hidden paths to a secret level, you can get that by finding those as a different exit within the levels themselves. You might need specific power-ups, or power-downs 😉. Getting all 6 golden coins is the goal and by that you unlock the final level, you can clear the map in any order you like, which is appreciated.

I would highly recommend playing this game for anyone who hasn't yet.

If there is any underrated Mario game it is easily Super Mario Land 2. For a gameboy game, this honestly stacks up to the greatness of Super Mario World. It is just a great Mario game through and through with the most unique settings Mario has been in.

Now this is a breeze of fresh air after Super Mario Bros 3. Refreshing gameplay and enemies, with great soundtrack!

Disclaimer: I played the DX romhack which adds colors to this otherwise monochrome game.

Super Mario Land 2 is one of the most unique 2D Mario games and probably also one of the best. Every single stage has it's own feel and gimmicks making for a consistently fun game throughout. The only things holding it back is the somewhat limited level design (due to it being a gameboy game) and the relatively short length (the game can be beat in under 2 hours). I would highly recommend giving it a playthrough, if possible with the DX romhack to make it look a little bit more colorful.

How is this gameboy game more creative than most Mario games from the 2010s.
