Summary

Hey! Things are really cookin' on Kitchen Island! Wario's got a scheme to steal the pirates' treasure so he can have his very own castle! You help Wario get the treasure by smashing into the the magic pots! Each pot changes him into Dragon Wario, Bull Wario, or Jet Wario! With each change comes new powers! Dozens of enemies try to stop Wario, but you have the power to beat them! Be the bad guy! Explore the many exciting levels of Kitchen Island! Battery-backed memory saves your progress for many hours of fun!

Note: I played the DX romhack which adds colors to this otherwise monochrome adventure.

Wario Land is a great follow-up to the already great Super Mario Land 2. The gameplay itself feels slower with Wario himself very much controlling like a slower heavier version of Mario. I feel this fits the Gameboy very well, because the tiny screen (that would often have a 'ghosting' efftect) does not combine that well with fast gameplay. New in this game are the hidden treasure collectibles which I found to be a joy to find. While the game feels closer to a Mario game than the later titles in this series, this first game should not be overlooked and is still a joy to play ~30 years later!

Wario's first foray into his own adventure and it's a solid one at that. Wario Land plays like a slower paced but heavier Mario which is extremely satisfying due to his ability to shoulder bash + pick up and throw enemies. One of the things I like is that you need to use coins you collect to active checkpoints and end stage doors, which in turn makes levels more exploratory and less easy to cheese like a Mario game. I love the treasure collecting aspect of this game and the fact that you have multiple endings based on how much treasure you collect. The controls are a little unpolished but that's just gameboy jank for you. Excited to play the others in the series.

A little too simple, especially the bosses who have very similar patterns! Otherwise the game is quite enjoyable even if it feels like it's not really finished.
