Summary

Persona is a philosophical game that takes place in a world close to our own. It is a departure from the typical swords and sorcery, and it delivers a tale of dreams, the purpose of life, and who we are as individuals. In Persona you have modern weapons like an Uzi and an AK-47. And instead of always fighting monsters, you are given the opportunity to talk your way through a confrontation. By talking things out, you can earn components of spells the more components you have, the more powerful your spells become.

I didn't play this game, but I did watch somebody else play it. It was entertaining for the most part.

SMT: Persona was the first game to kick off the SMT sub series that would eventually overtake SMT in popularity.

You’d think with how popular Persona is nowadays, a lot more people would’ve played the original and it’s sequel. You don’t particularly need to though, since P3, 4 and 5 have self contained stories. Persona 1 and 2 however are directly connected so you need to play 1 before you play 2. I do somewhat miss the persona games having linked plots but I can completely understand why this isn’t the case anymore.

The protagonists in 1 and 2 are also more actively involved in the plot unlike the future games where the protagonists are silent jack of all trades. Switching persona’s is an ability everybody in the cast has so this makes the protagonists a lot more grounded and forces them to be their own characters which is something that becomes absent in future games.

Social links aren’t present in 1 and 2 either. Whilst social links do have their benefits, they also lock a significant amount of character development behind them and can be very time consuming depending on the social link. With social links being absent in 1 and 2 this allows the characters to develop at a more natural pace and makes the story feel more fulfilling.

Persona 1 and 2 are 100% experiencing as a persona fan at least once. They laid the groundwork for the franchise and whilst the characters and writing as a whole isn’t perfect. It’s still really interesting to sit through and can be an absolute fever dream.
