Summary

Resident Evil 4 is directly based off the Wii port, having all the new features that the Wii added. Some of the key features of this version are stunning HD graphics running at a smooth 60 frames per second for the first time. It also features a complete visual overhaul to bring this revered title to the highest graphical quality ever. It has been fully optimized for the wide screen, texts have been sharpened and textures have been upgraded on characters, backgrounds and in-game objects. However, it should be noted that the cutscenes of the Separate Ways scenario are not in HD and have had their resolution lowered and placed in sepia format. Aside from the updated HUD, the Movie Browser is fixed to now display real time cut-scenes instead of the PS2 pre-rendered cut-scene, like it was the Wii version. The Mercenaries costumes cheat remain and fully work.

Resident Evil 4 is considered a cult classic and a favourite for all fans. And that is respectable it Is an amazing game, not my favourite however it is top 3 for me. Definitely. This game is great at story telling, some really intense sound design specially from the regenerators. Which still haunts me even tho it's been a week since I finished it. The enemies can be difficult to handle if you have no grenades or shotgun shells. I however do prefer to shoot in the legs and then stabby stab. It's more fun that way.💀

The story is so fun. The area is fun, long enough to look around for things also some things are very easy to miss especially If they're on top of trees. The puzzles can be frankly challenging especially for someone stubborn like me who refuses to watch YouTube walkthroughs because I'm not that type of person it would make me feel like a flop. So puzzles I did struggle. The boss fights can be challenging like salazar and some can be easy (yes I'm looking at you mendes).

The characters are great....well except for ashley. Leon is out there delivering dad one liners, Ada is there trolling us and being sexy, the merchant seems fun to have a drink with. I repeat his quotes all the time they live rent free in my head. Although the bosses are frankly boring personalities. Salazar however made me laugh. He was a comedic genius. Krauser was also fun to fight against although probs one of the harder ones. Then...there's ashley.... I could give you a list to describe this girl however that'd take forever. All I can say is I've had a few tantrums because of this bitch😭 truly I felt freedom again when I deleted the game from the p5 after I was done. The village parts of the game for me were the scariest ones. They felt somewhat realistic. I never got the chance to fight the chainsaw sisters since I faced el gigante but I'm cool with that honestly. I liked the challenge although ashley somehow kept getting in the way. also JUSTICE FOR THAT WOLF. LIKE HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN MY PARTNER

I also played seperate ways which was a nice spin off to see how the stories connected which made me go ooooh that makes sense now. But it's just ada saving everyone. We surprised at this point? She carries this franchise let's be real. Overall loved it. I can't wait to play the remake. However I'm video calling my best friend as they are playing it too. So I'm guiding them through the game since my memory is fresh and frankly they kinda need all the help they can get cause ashley owes them therapy.😫

Resident Evil 4 is a cult classic that, for its time, was a genre-defining, innovative experience, delivering good scares, fun action, and a visually impressive adventure.

Visually, the game aged quite a lot; it has been two decades, after all, but I found RE4 to be one of those games that aged like wine. It's perfectly serviceable and doesn't distract you from enjoying the game. I enjoy playing older games, so I enjoyed the look RE4 has. Environment is a good amount of varied; the initial sections I enjoy much more than the castle, since the castle at times looks more samey, and blurry textures are more visible. The underground lab is great, but the island was more of the same.

Gameplay is the highlight of RE4, tight gunplay that rewards precision and how skilled you are at approaching different enemy types and exploiting their weaknesses. Movement is tank controls; I don't mind it, but not being able to shoot while at least slightly moving is annoying at times. The briefcase item inventory system is rather inventive, and I enjoyed it quite a lot. The merchant, even though he doesn't provide any story, is a fun presence and has a good gameplay system that allows you to buy, sell, and upgrade items with it making sense setting- and story-wise. Quick time events, even though I do enjoy them in some games, are unforgiving here, often popping up during a cutscene for a split second, and it gets you killed if you don't react quickly enough, making them more frustrating than fun.

Narrative I found it to be weak in RE4; the basic setup is somewhat far-fetched, and the more campy vibe to some moments I found to be a little too on the nose than usual, being chased by an Indiana Jones-like boulder and then by a robotic huge statue was pushing it for me. The story does have some good characters, like Leon and Salazar, but Ashley is cute at times but more of an annoying presence, and Lord Sadler was not compelling enough to be taken seriously alone, although the parasitic threat does introduce some much-needed threat to the story. The game overall focuses more on action than classic horror; some enemies, like regenerators, do provide some scares from time to time.

To sum up, RE4 is still a fun adventure that holds up well enough today, worth giving a try, but if you have played the remake first, the original doesn't do too much better to consider it superior; still, though, for pure interest, why not give it a go?
