Summary

A party-based RPG/visual novel/sports game hybrid wherein the player, dubbed the Reader for their literacy by the group of scavengers who discovers them, is sent in exile to a lawless wasteland called the Downside and has to lead their ever-growing party of misfits to locations wherein many similar parties compete in Rites in order to attain freedom and be absolved of their crimes.

The gameplay is hit or miss but the story, world and music are on point as always for Supergiant.

Let's just start off with the fact that this game is a fucking beauty. This is EASILY one of the most gorgeous games I've ever played, aesthetic wise. The art, the OST, the dialogue, and the story are top notch, which is what you can expect from a company as incredible as Supergiant. The game takes the form of a visual novel combined with a 3 vs. 3 basketball tournament essentially. It's a weird blend, but it kind of works. Kind of.

The story can drag on at a few points and the 3 vs. 3 matches become somewhat monotonous through the midgame. It balances out though, since you end up with a bunch of characters on your team, each who are completely unique, story wise and combat wise. As you play the game you get chances to liberate some of your players and send them off to a better life so it goads you into playing with everyone. Oh, and don't even bother with the local multiplayer, it isn't fun and feels like an afterthought.

It makes sense as to why this game is overlooked when in comparison to Supergiant's other games, Bastion and Transistor. If you haven't played either of those two games, I recommend trying those first and then coming over and playing this one. This company makes games that have a lot to offer, and I feel like you can't truly appreciate what this game has to offer without knowing what came before it.

8/10, buy it if you're into demon doms and art and and shit.

Supergiant Games is amazing and I will play anything they make. I came here after discovering Hades and then going back and playing Bastion and Transistor. Their world building is always awesome, their soundtrack, their character designs, their voice acting - any game by Supergiant is such an exemplar of creating a compelling atmosphere. While it's definitely not the strongest of their already strong lineup, Pyre is a lot of fun. The controls took a minute to get used to since it's quite different to everything else they've done, but it remains faithful to that idea that it's easy to pick up and put down since a game only takes a few minutes. Definitely recommend for Supergiant fans. I had a great time.

The world, narrative, design and music, as with all Supergiant Games are incredible. Something about this setting and characters really clicked with me, even though the gameplay loop, though refined, wasn't as fun as other Supergiant offerings I loved the theme of it.
