It all started when I was excited to play mario games for once. On my Wii U console the first game I got was NSMBU. Then, my second, Paper Mario, which was this one. I remember the whole reason why I got this game wasn’t actually for Paper Mario. It was actually because the 3ds version of MM didn’t have an online version. So I bought the Wii U and some other games. But I had already seen this game before on a famous youtuber named, ZackScott. However, actually playing the game was a different story
PROS
Overall I think this game was a great improvement from Sticker Star. Removing all of the colorless spots was really enjoyable and the paint concept is used very well. Such as using it for healthbars in the combat system, and needing paint for colouring battle cards. This really gave the paint a meaning. The soundtrack in this game also did not disappoint, I struggled to find a track that didn’t fit the game’s persona. The story was better than sticker star and, obviously, Mario’s partner, Huey, this time was much better than the last one, Kersti. The paint stars revealing new areas that were otherwise unreachable was a nice touch to the game, once again unlike them royal stickers. The parallel mechanic was bery creative and something we haven’t seen yet in the sequel.
CONS
Even though I liked the battle system, I really missed some cards like the flashy infinijump and clone jump because I feel like if they were used on a better game it would make the game very different. The game once again lacked direction when using ‘things’, but less so than sticker star. Because of this, I did have to use a guide to check out what I needed, because I didn’t want to waste any cards. I will give you an example, in Violet Passage I used the fan to blow the boat into action, however it didn’t work. I then figured out that I hadn’t set sail and this, in my opinion is a lack of direction from the game. Others like in Larry’s boss fight, using the cork at the right time is very necessary. The story was alright, but if we are going to compare to previous games like super paper mario… It doesn’t come close.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
Overall, when I had to sell my game, to afford to switch ( ;) ) to a new console, it was very tough. Especially THIS game. I would give it a 5/10 some big improvements needed, but fun to play.
