Summary

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes is a prologue to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It offers players new sneaking and traversal methods compared to its predecessors, as well as the choice in what order the story events take place by selecting missions by advance. The most important change for this title is the shift to an open world design with a real-time day and night cycle doing away with the linear mission approach of previous games. The game was originally developed as a mission for The Phantom Pain, but an extended development time resulted in director Hideo Kojima splitting the specific portion of the game as a stand-alone product so that players could get early access to Metal Gear Solid V.

A great sneak peek at what MGSV will end up being, but in retrospect, a baffling product that was sold at too high of a price.

Yes, the new engine at the time provided some impressive visuals, optimization, and gameplay innovations to the series that always had sort of a clunky aspect to it, but I don't know if I should commend this project for it all or what MGSV was going to deliver.

Kiefer Sutherland is great as Big Boss, and I wish we got more of his performance; the story is surprisingly dark for MGS standards but too short to be enjoyable.

The best part of Ground Zeroes is clearly Camp Omega and how detailed and well-built it is; it's a fun sandbox to play with. Side content is plentiful but clearly padded at times.

Personally, I can't recommend buying Ground Zeroes when MGSV is already available, but it's somewhat worth a try if you bought it bundled in with MGSV.

I wish The Phantom Pain was more like this than an empty pointless open world
