Summary

Layers of Fear is a psychedelic horror that will keep you on-edge for the reminder of the game. Delve deep into the mind of an insane painter and discover the secret of his madness, as you walk through a constantly shifting house. Heavily inspired by the masterpiece paintings from the past centuries, and the architecture and décor from the XIX century. Layers of Fear is a truly unique experience, where each move of the camera can change your surroundings. Layer by layer uncover the visions, fears and horrors that entwine the protagonist and finish the masterpiece he has strived so long to create.

The story had some promise, couldve been interesting, but was told in a rlly bad way.so it ended up just being a very bad walking simulator with good graphics and horrible “puzzles”.

Now i understand why sh2 fans are anxious about bloober adapting it.

Layers of Fear is very much a walking simulator in the definitive sense. Gameplay is very simplistic and has you walking through a haunted house that gradually gets more and more distorted in a psychedelic horror sequence. There is minimal interaction with objects and the puzzles are incredibly easy. There are almost no stakes, as death is very rare and easily avoided, so I never found myself on the edge of my seat while playing. Because of this, I never really found the game that scary apart from a few well placed jumpscares. However, survival horror was never what this game was going for, and that is okay. It is going for an exploration of interesting setpieces while the player idly sits back and observes. You are observing the gameplay rather than actively taking part in it, just like you would do with art. I believe the developers intended for this, in order to capture the themes of art in the game's story. Speaking of, the story is conveyed cryptically through notes and environmental story telling in traditional horror game fashion. A lot of it is open to interpretation, as the ending is very vague. Layers of Fear doesn't overstay its welcome, as the length is incredibly short, lasting only two to three hours. Therefore, I wouldn't say the game was worth the £16 I spent in the Xbox store for it. For a short and simplistic horror experience made by a small development team, I'd say you should wait for this one to go on sale.
