Summary

God of War Collection brings the nonstop action of God of War and God of War II to modern consoles in HD. Experience the brutal world of ancient Greece as the legendary Spartan Kratos seeks revenge on Ares, the God of War, and tries to accomplish what no mortal has ever done... alter the course of Fate itself.

These are very much must play games. Now this isn't to say they aren't without their faults, but keep in mind these are ps2 games. There isn't much point in talking about these games separately since they are very very similar, so imma try and talk about them collectively and point of the noticeable differences. The combat is definitely the draw here, just over the top pure chaotic action, killing thousands of enemies on your fairly short adventures. Weapons and abilities differ a bit between games, but I'd give the edge to the first game as I found the abilities a little bit better and I found the secondary weapon more fun as well. Story wise, they are both excellent, but they do go aboht telling their stories differently. In God of war 1 the story and lore is sprinkled throughout the game to plant the seeds and making you want to discover more to move the game. As in god of war 2 a majority of the story is really compacted at the beginning to start you off and at the end for a huge payout, really banking that the already established story is reason enough to keep going without much else throughout the game. That might all seem long winded, but simply it's a very good method of delivering the story. Visuals are good for their time, although the cutscenes from 2 honestly caught me off guard for how amazing they were. My only real issues are how annoying some of the puzzles can be, some are fine enough and honestly act as a nice change of pace for a little while, but there are very distinct puzzles and platforming sections that are INFURIATING, and if you play/ed these games, you will know exactly what parts I'm referring to here. But don't let this small issue turn you off from playing what is without a doubt some all time classics

So  after finishing this gem , I sat down for a whole day thinking about what to write in this review , so here we are , It wont be easy and this review might a bit long since I m gonna try to talk about both gow 1 and 2 , also I m not gonna be talking about the challenge mode additional content since I m not interested in playing it .
Gameplay 8/10
Gow is known for it combo based hack and slash playstyle  , its super  fun and its hypersatisfying to cut though your enemies with the blade of athena one of the coolest fantasy weapons I ve ever seen , the combat didnt change much in gow they just added a couple more
weapons and spells and there is QTE ofc . But the gameplay in this game isnt limited at combat , there is some sections where you need to solve puzzles but I m not the biggest fan of them for the most time . The third component of the gow experience is the platforming/obstacles course part which makes one of my fav parts of the games tbh especially in the hades escape part in gow 1 . Another thing to note is there is some level of exploration but it very limited , and the most you can find is some secret room with a lot of orbs or secret collectibles .
Story 7/10
I will be frank , the story in gow has a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies , its doesnt hold up well in it structure , buuuut the ancient Greek setting and the revenge centric plot is what gets me invested on this one tbh .
Characters 7/10
The only characters that are worth noting are kratos which btw is one of my fav protagonists in gaming , he is a very well done anti hero character , icarus which has an interesting backstory in gow 2 , and finally the middle sister of fate which I liked her design but her personality was generic.  And this is the best it can get , other characters are very mediocre Its not even funny , ares is a complete joke of an antagonist , zeus is better than him but he is not even a good vilain let alone a compelling character , other olympians had 4 to 5 max for each one of them expect athena who could've done more in the narrative  , and dont get me strated on the titans , but hopefully gow 3 might fix this .
Game design (I will rate the games separately)
Gow1 :  6/10
This game suffers from a lot of problems imo , first and foremost is the lack of variety in enemies and weapons , this game has only 2 weapons , and there is approximately 6 basic types of enemies that you face in every level with a lot of reskins , another thing I want to talk about is that in the Pandora's temple the pacing of the game slows down a lot and you have to solve puzzle after puzzle after puzzle it's got boring  . Finally there is only 3 bosses in this game which is a shame .
Gow 2 : 7/10
Gow 2 improved a lot in terms of enemy variety and it has more content overall (more bosses , puzzles , areas , secrets , weapons , enemies and others ) , also they improved the level design with  a lot of areas looping back on themselves which really good in a linear game . But at the same time I can't say it was really good , since they added more bosses but some of them were mediocre mechanically  speaking and none of the bosses had health bars so you don't know if you are facing a boss or a miniboss and you don't know how much damage you did which was a big downgrade from gow 1 imo , another thing is like in gow 1's Pandora's temple the pacing of the game slowed down a lot in the Palace of fates with tons of puzzles which some were really annoying and tedious I was close to rage quitting in the phoenix chamber .
Sound design 7/10
The voice actor for kratos is legendary , I love every single one of his lines , the sound effects for the blades of chaos are well done and makes slashing mobs more satisfying . In terms of soundtracks , they were good and orchestral , with 4 of them being super memorable .
Artsyle 7/10
Some designs were cool , like kratos and the sisters of fate , some were normal like zefus and peseus  , others were laughably bad like gaya bad the majority of the
titans .
Graphics
Gow 1 : 8/10
gow 2 : 9/10
Enjoyment 9/10
