The Continent of Valencia is split into two territories. To the north is the Kingdom of Rigel, home to followers of the Dark God Doma. To the south is the Kingdom of Sofia, where the Earth Goddess Mila is worshipped. When Rigel invades Sofia, two heroes, Arum and Cellica, raise an army to topple Rigel and the Dark God that is backing the conflict.
The game follows two protagonists, lifelong friends Alm and Celica, over the course of five chapters and takes place in two kingdoms on the continent of Valentia: Rigel and Zofia. The world map is slowly revealed for players to traverse through the game's five chapters.

Fire Emblem Gaiden has not aged well.
Despite being a great improvement over the first Fire Emblem in terms of gameplay, narrative and map design, it is still unokeasant to play it because of its costant glitches, slow gameplay and unbalanced units.
The main idea of the game is to control two different armies in two different parts of the same continent: a brilliant idea (with an incredible execution for 1992) dragged down only by the unbalanced classes accessible for each army. While Celica army is more balanced, Alm's one is almost completely physical and full of slow, weak cavalry.
If one can get around the slow gameplay and unfairness of some stages, then this game still holds as a decent strategy game. Otherwise, there's no reason to play it after the remake came out in 2017.
