The original Final Fantasy III comes to life with completely new graphics and audio! A remodeled 2D take on the third game in the world-renowned Final Fantasy series! Enjoy the timeless story told through charming retro graphics.
An earthquake opens up a previously hidden cavern in Altar Cave near the village of Ur on the floating continent. Four young orphans under the care of Topapa, the village elder, explore the earthquake's impact and come across a crystal of light. The crystal grants them a portion of its power, and instructs them to go forth and restore balance to the world. Not knowing what to make of the crystal's pronouncements, but nonetheless recognizing the importance of its words, the four inform their adoptive family of their mission and set out to explore an overworld outside the area in which they were brought up, in order to bring balance back to the world. Their adventures lead them to discover that there lies a whole world beyond the boundaries of the floating continent upon which they were living. In the world below, they discover a warlock named Xande, one of three apprentices to the legendary Archmage Noah, is trying to possess the crystals of light, so as to bring forth chaos and disorder. The four warriors eventually arrive at the Crystal Tower where they discover that the Cloud of Darkness is the source of the recent events. The Cloud attempts to create a similar situation to the Flood of Light a millennium earlier so that the world is pulled into the void. The Light Warriors traverse into the domain of the dark crystals to free the imprisoned Dark Warriors and defeat the Cloud of Darkness, thereby restoring the crystals and balance to the world. In the DS remake, there are several "side quests" that can also be completed.

I wasn’t a fan of the secret passageways at first but they’re kind of fun, and it’s great searching for items. Too many jobs, I tried a few before defaulting back to the red and black mage, upgraded my monk and warrior. I think my biggest complaint about this game is the lack of an ether. I keep running out of mp so I end up haven’t to use potions and running low on those. It’s really restricting my grinding and super frustrating. Bad enough ethers were expensive in FF2 but at least they existed there! How am I finding elixers before finding an ether!
So I beat the game. I swear this felt like it should’ve been FF2 not FF3. I eventually adapted to no ethers and cottages/tents but I was salty about it! There are a lot of jobs you can choose from, you can really have fun with that, sadly I like to stick to certain jobs and not experiment lol. I think the strangest part of this game was the boss two headed dragon. Tell me how it’s stronger than the final boss, constantly one shotting my party members. Thankfully Reddit taught me to change my party formation to the back row and I ended up winning with only one party member left, my dragoon.
Overall I could feel myself getting burnt out playing this, I don’t like the magic level systems or the excessive jobs (at least let me equip two!), and I was pretty happy to finally be done. Took a peak at the next game and am pleased it’s back to not having me name the characters and having levels for magic mp (I think?). There’s a story and character motivation/depth, and literally the first items you get are a tent and ether lol. So maybe I’ll keep going instead of taking a break like I’d planned.
