Summary

Kunio has to go see his master, Bunzo, because he is in some kind of trouble. Kunio's brother, Tsuu, tells him to wait. Right in front of the dojo, Kunio meets Asaji and Okoto. Apparently, Asaji and Okoto are fiances and Kunio appears to be jealous. Kunio enters Bunzo's Dojo. Tora, a local ruffian, has cursed Bunzo! To get rid of the curse, he needs some Kanpou. So begins Kunio's quest! Assemble everyone! It's time for a story! The game was originally released as Downtown Special: Kunio-kun no Jidaigeki Dayo Zenin Shuugou!, but has since been localized as Downtown Special Kunio-kun's Historical Period Drama!

An incredible title that improved on almost everything the first River City on NES did, adding an open map with lots of secrets and different routes and the most satisfying combat system on the console. Pulling combo in this old game feels more satisfying and easy than most beat 'em up that came out after it.
The sprite work is amazing, and while crowded areas can get a little slow or hard to navigate due to the technical limitations of the console, it's really amazing the developers were able to create such things on a 8-bit console.

This is, by far, the best game on the NES together with Super Mario Bros. 3, at least for me.
