Summary

The original arcade version of "Double Dragon II" is essentially an improved version of the first game. The biggest change in the game's controls are in the replacement of the original's punch and kick buttons with two directional-based attack buttons (Left Attack and Right Attack) similar to Renegade. Pressing the attack button of the player's current direction will do a standard series of punches, while pressing the opposite attack button will perform a back kick. A few new moves are added as well, including a Hurricane Kick. Like in the original game, the arcade version of Double Dragon II is divided into four missions: a heliport, a lumber storehouse, a wheat field, and the new hideout of the boss. Each stage has its own boss character with his own theme. After defeating Willy (the final boss from the original game) in the fourth stage, the player will confront a double of their own character for the game's final battle. If two players reach the end together, then both will each to have to face their own clone for the final battle.

Okay, so the two people who actually actively follow me for a while, liking on each of my review, first of all, thank you. Second, if you have followed me for a while you would know that I wasn't a big fan of the double dragon I's arcade version, and considered the nes version superior to that.

Well, I can happily say that the arcade version of Double Dragon II is a major improvement on both and an actually fantastic game to play.
It is no longer than something like 30-40 minutes, but those minutes were damn well awesome.
I think the major part of it was then changing the controls to make it such they refer more to your direction of hit than what kind of hit you wish to dish out. Basically, if you press, for example, S and are face left, then you will do the normal punch-kick thing, and if you press S and are facing right, then the character would do a back punch and back kick. Same thing, for let's say my emulation control setting of the key Z, if you press it when you are facing right the character will do a punch-kick and if left, then a back punch-kick. This may sound tedious at first, but trust me when i say this, this control scheme actually works in the game's favor and helps in creating better flow of the fight, giving you better change to take out two enemies at once without needing to learn complicated arrow key + punch button combos. Its slick and I wish more 2d brawlers went this way.

In terms of presentation, the artwork is also a great improvement, and while the locations are still somewhat generic, they now pop out with better lively colors, and the final level, which has the same thing as the final level of the first game where you avoid weird brick popping out, statues that have life of their own, and then fighting a large amount of goons (and a shadow ghost?) in the final arena, well that level now genuinely looks gorgeous under the limitations of its sprite count. THEY REALLY LOOKED AT THE DRAWBACKS OF THE FIRST GAME, AND IMPROVED EVERY TO A GAME THAT IS STILL FUN AFTER 30+ Years.

Though...unfortunately, Marion still looks ugly. Like I am not kidding. If you look at her image in the "The End" post card CG, with her surrounded on both sides by Billy and Jimmy, her face looks like Gollum from lord of the rings. And I am not f-ing kidding. Just look at it yourself and tell me if that snotty punchable face isn't the most ugliest face you ever saw. Just trust me on this, Billy and Jimmy would make for a better body pillow than her.
You may look at the poster here and think "but she looks gorgeous in the poster". Well, trust me, she ONLY looks gorgeous in the poster. In the game itself, she looks like a chewed out bubblegum that was shat over by a skunk.

Anyway, the arcade version is great, and I may not play the NES version anytime soon for any comparisons, but this game is amazing and I will highly reccomend it, especially to those players who were dissapointed in the first game like me.
