Summary

Captain America: Super Soldier combines a highly athletic combat system with fluid platforming and a highly tuned suite of shield attacks, as Cap explores a massive castle turned military installation. His shield can be employed in numerous ways: taking out multiple enemies at once, deflecting incoming fire back at enemies, solving puzzles, and scaling walls. Players will be able to launch shield-first into the fray with the superior force of the world's first Super-Soldier at their fingertips and they will need every bit of that strength to overcome a castle that's both an acrobatic playground for the Captain's physical prowess and a house of mystery with enemies and danger at every turn.

I struggle giving this an 8, since I so badly want to give it a 9, but I don't believe it's a near perfect game. I'd say the biggest flaw of this game is that it had so many good ideas, that it was simply to much for the ps3 to handle. The graphics are actually quite good, but there's a noticeable drop once you're moving Cap around. The biggest flaw is the performance. I'm not this crazy person who demands 120 fps in every game or its unplayable, but the game takes some heavy hits here. It is the ps3 so I do give it leeway, and I don't usually mention framerates for the ps3 since it's hard to criticize it for its time, especially compared to today's technology, but it's very noticeable. There's definitely an adjustment period, but after a bit you should be fine to enjoy the game. Now, combat is actually really fun here. There's definitely a bit of influence from the arkham games, but it's very much more of a hack and slash. The incorporation of throwing the shield is really unique to just this game and there's nothing else like it. There's also platforming here, which is good in theory. It's only just qte's, but it's fun in simple sections. These areas are where framerates take the biggest hits, so it's a bit harder to enjoy these sections, but the times it works well they're actually super fun. One thing I did not expect this game to have is metroidvania elements. Now this game is not a metroidvania, it's very much linear, but the way the map is structured and interconnected, being open at all times, almost gives me metroid prime vibes. The collectibles here are quite fun, with major collectibles being displayed on the map making completionists lives easier, while the more abundant collectibles that don't all need to be collected aren't on the map, allowing for actual exploration without making it feel like a pain to get everything afterwards since there's so many. Last thing I want to mention is the length/story. It's very short, not needing much time to 100% and platinum, taking me not even 20 hours for the platinum. It's the perfect length. The reason I mentioned story and length together is that since this is a shorter experience, the fact that this is more of a side story and not trying to be a full spectacle makes this so much better. Red skull isn't the main villain, so they didn't have to make a major story fit into such a small game. Having Zola be the main antagonist, it makes this actually feel like a tie in game, rather than trying to be this feeble attempt at a grandiose game that just fall flat. It's fun, short, and doesn't feel like they tried to take something big but fit it into a small package. It's very much how Sega used its resources to make something small feel big, rather than something big being used poorly and ultimately feeling small 😉

Chris Evans wasn't paid enough for his voice. The game plays similar to the Arkham series and is pretty enjoyable. Lacking polish

The game is fun enough to play through for the whole story and for some extras but the environments get repetitive and the story being one long mission is sad. It tries to connect to the MCU but then breaks the canon of that which makes me ask the same question that I ask of every superhero movie tie in game, why? Separate this from the movie and it could’ve been much more. Anyway it was fun and I had a solid time with it.
