Summary

700 years before the events of Ys I & II, the land of Ys was on the brink of destruction. Demons came in droves and forced the twin Goddesses who ruled the land to whisk their subjects away from the surface, into the safe embrace of the clouds. The demons were persistent, however, erecting a massive tower in pursuit. The battle that raged upon the ground had begun ascending for a second round up above. One day, amidst this turmoil, the Goddesses stole away into the night, vanishing from Ys altogether. And there's only one place they could have gone: the Devil's Tower. A search party of knights and sorcerers was hastily formed and dispatched to the surface in hopes of retrieving these runaway deities. Among its members were apprentice knight Yunica Tovah and troubled sorcerer Hugo Fact. This is their story. Or at least, it's how each of them remembers it. Expanding upon the gameplay elements introduced in Ys: The Ark of Napishtim and further developed in Ys: The Oath in Felghana, Ys Origin perfects the formula by adding different styles of play and new features never before seen in the Ys universe. Best described as an arcade-like platformer RPG with Metroidvania elements and a complex, multi-faceted narrative, Ys Origin is the perfect mix of action, exploration and story. Screen-filling bosses with complex AI, unique platforming elements, innovative puzzles and a deeply involving mystery await within the wildly varied confines of this classic Ys dungeon. Come see how long you can last in the Devil's Tower...

Completed Hugo's story and it's great stuff. I will definitely replay it with the other character to unlock the third one. Bosses are great, story and music very good too. I wish there was an automatic firing option by holding the attack button though, as it can become quite tiring for the hands, especially for boss fight. But it's a nice to have only, game's great.

It was an overall satisfying entry into the Ys-series for me. I liked the bosses and how the movement felt with any of the three characters. I personally think the idea of replaying this story works best with at least some more altering of the level designs so the game doesn't get too tedious, or at least a more indepth story but I was still satisfied after my final playthrough.

At least the characters play quite differently and the mysteries kept me interested enough to go for basically three playthroughs. Not every game could achieve that. I enjoyed it but it had nothing that really blew me away or would make me wanna revisit it anytime soon.

Was it worth the 30 hours? I'm not sure. The Hack 'n Slash gameplay IS fun, but it did get old. With the right mindset and some patience, maybe more breaks than I took - this game could be more fun for you.

Gameplay is very spammy and outdated, bosses were great though and unique.

No check point too, the game is more punishing than Dark souls as you may lose 1 hour of progress upon death

Ys8 had much more fun gameplay

A perfect game. My only gripe is that you can't skip cutscenes on repeat playthroughs, but it's so fun to play and the story is so good I don't really care. Probably better than Ys IV: Dawn of Ys, but I like bump combat too much to admit that.

Really fun entry in the Ys series. One story told from each of the three playable characters' perspectives. Fast-paced, fun combat with a great OST. I do wish each character had a slightly different route through the tower. At least one unique floor/level/area per character would have been nice, but the difference you get from each character's perspective, how their character relates to the supporting cast and wider narrative was still satisfying. Highly recommend. Slightly more in-depth review coming...when it comes.

Combat is fun, although a bit clunky. The lack of direction makes you feel lost more often than not and not knowing what to do. Difficulty is completely unbalanced, some bosses are a walk in the park, while others feel completely unfair. Save points are far from each other, and that forces you to backtrack A LOT.
I did not find this game enjoyable.
