Tenkaichi 2 is a fighting game with more than 120 playable characters, the biggest amount ever featured in a Dragon Ball game. The main Dragon Adventure mode follows an epic story mode that covers the first Dragon Ball Z saga (Saiyan Saga) right up to the last Dragon Ball GT saga (Dragon Saga), including all of the major battles, making it one of the most comprehensive Dragon Ball Z games.
So before I had gotten access to Sparking Zero this was my favourite ever Dragon Ball game. Like everything about this to me was perfection. Starting from the exciting music in the starter menu, to the fun loading screen of making yamcha's flying energy Ball fly across the loading screen to smash things while you wait for an exciting battle, everything about this game to me in my heart is perfection, although most people do prefer 3 imo this was the best of the ps2 games.
The Storymode is so fun as you get to live through the show of Z again, but also them introducing Story modes for GT which is something Sparking Zero failed to do cough cough. Yes I'm A GT apologist. Sue me. This game was such a huge improvement compared to the first. As the first had like 60 characters while this one has double coming up to 129. With 7 extra stages. Least on the PS2 version. The Wii version has a few extra ones. So it was fairly nice to see some of my GT favourites including movie characters and you also get the storymode for some of the movie fights too!
The characters themselves do feel different, there is a clear Unfortunate divide when it comes to the Meta characters. My favourite to use is either Kid Trunks, Gotenks, Pan or Android 18. However back then I never really saw people compete as it had no online mode. They played this for fun which I love this kinda opportunity for players. To just enjoy a battle with friends. The graphics to me have aged well. Sure Tenkaichi 3 has better graphics but this still feels special to me. Storymode itself was challenging af some time, so I did have to do many tries with some bosses as the tasks themselves can be hard to achieve. What's even better you get to fly to your destinations during Storymode levels. HOW COOL IS THAT?!
What I also love about this is the attention to detail when it comes to the arena, as to how you can move around the arena freely, to give you time to hide and charge up so you can be ready for a royal beatdown, while providing you a mini map of where the opponent is located. How your clothes rip, if you receive damage, And not to mention the sweet detail of how you can break buildings by even punching someone hard enough through it!!! AHHHH BRING ME BACK TO THIS TIME PERIOD.
