Summary

This is a story of survival in a strange new world. Celebrating the 20th Anniversary of the Digimon Anime, Digimon Survive presents a brand-new adventure set in a mysterious world with characters designed by Uichi Ukumo, and music by the much-acclaimed Tomoki Miyoshi. Digimon Survive sees a brand-new group of teenagers, led by Takuma Momozuka, get lost on a school camping trip, finding them transported to a strange new world of monsters and danger. As they fight their way back home through an animated world of difficult decisions and deadly battles, players’ choices throughout the game will impact the evolution of their monster allies, and the final ending. Battles in the game are fought in 2D, in a more classic SRPG style.

takes way too long to get going as the introduction is dull but really fun battle mechanics

This game was my introduction to the visual novel genre, and I’m really glad that it was. While I read a lot of books (and love my home library), huge amounts of reading in a game is a tough sell for me. Luckily, the game alternated reading with tactical RPG and turn-based combat elements to make the pace a bit more palatable. Without it, the game would have been far more monotonous to play through. Be aware if you're considering playing it though, the majority of the game is definitely reading, and this is by a wide margin.

I’ve always enjoyed how much Digimon games try something new and different. Digimon games truly have a rich variety of games and despite the extensive reading involved in this one, it did a good job of servicing all the characters, accommodating branching narratives, and giving the player meaningful and consequential decisions that affected the overall narrative and ending. I particularly enjoyed how it presents another great take on the entire Digimon concept/mythology who are referred to in this game as Kemonogami (Beast Gods).

As expected, the Digimon sprites are really nice, and depending on your decisions throughout the game, this also affects the digivolution paths that are taken. Branching digivolution paths have always been a great aspect of the Digimon lore. Four full playthroughs are required to clock the game. I did three when it first came out and only came back to the fourth playthrough now, but I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. Definitely recommend for any Digimon fan. If you’re a fan, the volume of reading isn’t so bad.

Way too bloated, too many characters, moves at a snails pace. It's a great idea that's very badly executed.

Arguably the best story and lore across the franchise - with dark and realistic moral themes galore. The SRPG aspects are a tad basic at Normal, non NG+ difficulty & the last part (on Moral route) can be a bit tedious.

The gameplay has a lot more potential with Mugen recollection and its associated difficulties in NG+, but Digimon diversity is certainly lacking compared to other games (and is much more noticeable in NG+)

Play if: Fan of visual novels, fan of Digimon lore, fans of SRPGs, a proponent of good mature dark story

Don't play if: Not a fan of VNs or SRPGs
