Gameplay wise Cry Of Fear is a Survival horror at it's core with a very limited inventory system and scarce resources in the world. On different occasions You will truly have to decide on what to take and what to drop which actually does have consequences at certain points of the game.
Visually the game does look dated but I don't think that is actually an issue considering the game was developed on such a dated and modified game engine. To me Half Life engine games always had an uncanny and strange feel and look and the developers brilliantly use that aspect to heighten the horror experience. The way the monsters twitch and move is truly terryfying and the monster design itself would make Team Silent proud.
The soundtrack is another terrific aspect of the game. It manages to blend both the industrial and melancholic sound of the Silent Hill series. At certain moments I was surprised by the resemblance, (not as a ripoff) but at the same time it also manages to sound unique in it's own way.
With all said the game isn't without it's flaws. The game has a lot of technical issues that plagues the overall experience. I was sometimes frustrated by the bugs and how the game performed and some of controls did feel a bit clunky. I also didn't enjoy some of the backtracking at the first half of the game which feeled a bit like a chore.
But in the end despite it's flaws Cry of Fear is a terrifying experience and it shows how good game design can overcome other in game issues. It also shows how developers should take inspiration and add their own interpretation and taste to it. Even though the dark & depressing themes may not be for everyone, If you are a fan of psychological and survival horror this free gem will be a hell of a thrill from start to finish.
