Summary

Avenging Spirit, known in Japan as Phantasm, is a 1991 2-player platform arcade game developed by C.P. Brain and published by Jaleco. Players attack (or possess) enemies, collect power-ups, and defeat bosses to advance. Players can possess one of four characters with unique abilities at the start of the game, but the library of enemies expands and changes with each level.

The original arcade version of this game was released in 1991, but in 92 it got a GameBoy release. And in 2022, that GameBoy game got re-released with all region locked content originally exclusive to the Japanese version of the game. This 2022 version is the one I played.

It's a really fun 2D side scrolling arcade game that I didn't know if I'd love or not. Surprisingly, I couldn't put it down. With only six stages, it's also surprisingly difficult. A quick play, but a fun one—with charming music, crisp pixel art (downsized very well from the arcade version), fun levels, and creative bosses. Sure it shows its age a bit, but I'm glad I played it.

This is also the first game I played on my brand new Analogue Pocket.
