Summary

Amnesia: The Bunker is a first-person horror game set in a desolate WW1 Bunker. Face the oppressing terrors stalking the dark corridors. Search for and use the tools and weapons at your disposal, while keeping the lights on at all costs. Overcome fear, persevere, and make your way out alive.

Frictional decided to shake things up with Amnesia, and essentially made a Resident Evil game. And yes, it's as cool as that sounds. There's resource management, a vague health system, and even a classic saferoom with an item box (and a soothing theme to suit). There's even weapons (very atypical for a Frictional game), but they're more of a tool than an exterminator. See, like some of the genre's greatest monsters, the 'Stalker' cannot be killed. It's a persistent roaming threat that will follow you throughout the game, and it's not very friendly. Frictional essentially created the cat-and-mouse type stalker gameplay, but with the nonlinear map of The Bunker, it's elevated to something closer to Alien: Isolation's Xenomorph. The Bunker's best gimmick is the generator, a device in the central saferoom that can be refueled to supply power to the bunker—and, most importantly, keep the lights on. The beast will hide in its tunnels while the lights are on, only coming out if you make too much noise—but when the lights go out, it will become even more aggressive and actively roam the halls. This means that keeping the generator topped off with fuel is paramount to survive. This makes each trek out of the saferoom feel urgent and deliberate. I often looked at the map and plotted my exact course before turning on the generator, to save every drop I could. It's not impossible to traverse the dark, but it's markedly more challenging—and your only other main light source is a wind-up flashlight, and cranking it is very loud. Noise should be avoided at all costs, as the beast is very sensitive to sound. The game has a lot of light immersive sim elements that often allow for multiple solutions, but most of these solutions are loud. Dragging objects, blowing up doors, and shooting locks will all attract the monster to your position—so it's important to always plan an escape route or hiding spot beforehand. Oh, and if you take too much damage you'll start leaving a trail of blood, leading the monster straight to you! Yippee! There's also these huge gross rats that will frequently block your path. You can kill them, or distract them with meat—but the only way to permanently get rid of them is to burn their food source, which I thought was super neat. The narrative is also cool, but lacks a lot of the depth found in Frictional's previous outings. My biggest issue here is the super obnoxious stuttering when transitioning between zones, but it's not a huge deal.

So yeah, The Bunker rules. Amnesia rules. Frictional can't miss.

Gosh this type of horror game set in a bunker alone with a monster, really creeps me out. It has awesome sound design as well, makes the game feels realistic. I love it.

Positives: The gameplay here is great. With the way the game let's you defend yourself against the Monster while also still making you feel helpless is balanced very well. The resource management in this game is amazing, especially with the fuel for power. This games gameplay loop is just great. The overall environment of the bunker just elevates the Horror elements of the game. Even with power on there are still areas of pitch black and it still feels tense. And when the power turns off and you experience a black out the game gets so much more horrifying. The audio design is amazing as well. The sound of the Monster in the walls of the bunker are very horrifying. The overall atmosphere with the audio design. The story and world building is good as well. With the notes that you can read they really help you understand how the bunker got to the way it was. This game in general is amazing when it comes to the Horror design.

Negatives: The ending for me was a bit abrupt. After you blow up the exit with dynamite you basically just go into this big arena with bridges and either avoid him or try to kill him and then it's just straight out of the bunker. It was just abrupt to me.

Amnesia: The Bunker is an amazing game that offers a top notch Survival Horror experience.
