Summary

Yakuza Kiwami is a remake of the 2005 open world action-adventure game Yakuza.

Man... This game hurt my feelings
Kinda can say it's just as good as Yakuza zero, but zero was better at storytelling.

Really enjoyed It and pretty excited for playing kiwami 2

Kiwami doesn't hit the highs of yakuza 0 but is still very good. The combat in the game is honestly amazing and switching between styles is so fluid and easy that it gives the gameplay a ton of variety.

The main story and sub stories are good as well. I especially loved how as you progressed, a few of the sub stories indirectly tied back to what just happened in the main story which was really cool. Some of those stories even had fully rendered cut scenes! A definite step up from zero in that regard. And of course, it has tons of cool, interesting new characters and other whacky hilarious mini games.

Some knocks against the overall game are that the majima everywhere stuff gets pretty tedious at times and also makes your fights with majima related to the story not hit as hard since you're kind of constantly fighting him anyways. The main story also had a few issues to me related to a couple twists in the middle and end of the game.

Despite these things, I loved it so much i finished all the substories, defeated amon and finished with 76% of the completion list done. All in all, i really loved it but when comparing it to zero, it's a definite small notch below it. Kiwamis main story and characters aren't as compelling as zero (characters especially). And while I praised some of the sub stories for fitting into the main narrative, overall, the substories were still a bit weaker and less memorable than zero. The one thing kiwami has is the combat system and rpg mechanics being much better than zero. In zero, you can pick your favorite fighting style and just roll through the game but in kiwami, I wanted to and enjoyed switching between all the styles and often times felt incentivized to. So yeah, while it doesn't quite reach its prequels heights, it's still a great game in its own right and I can't wait to eventually continue kiryus story after a little break.
