Summary

The Sims is a life-building simulation with emphasis on intimate details of individual characters rather than expansion of an entire society or civilization. You are in control of nearly every aspect of the lives of the individuals who make up your chosen population in the neighborhood. Characters are developed from the ground up and you infuse and mold them with personalities, looks, desires, moods, urges, living arrangements, career and personal choices, life styles, and reactions.

As a huge fan of the Sims 2 and 3, it was a great experience playing The Sims 1 for the first time. It’s not nearly as polished as those games, but it still has charm in spades. What separates the original game from the others is the difficulty. The Sims is frustrating at points, because it takes so long to make a friend or get your sim married while their needs bars rapidly deplete. Small gripes aside, this game was mostly a joy to play, and it gave me more insight into a series I’ve enjoyed for so long.

It absolutely does not hold up today, but I can’t deny it’s iconic and giving it anything less than a 10 would be sacrilege.

I spent much of my youth obsessed with this game (and fighting with my crumby old Packardbell to get it to run it). While it may seem old hat to people nowadays, when this was released it was an absolutely mind-blowing experience.
