Summary

Test Drive: Eve of Destruction blends the best elements of racing and demolition and is packed with 25 different events, including Demo Derby, where the last car standing wins; Gauntlet, where the player climbs behind the wheel of a hearse and tries to finish a set number of laps while the rest of the field attempts to stop them; Trailer Race, a new brand of racing event, where players compete while towing various types of trailers and must finish the race with something resembling a trailer still attached. Additionally, Test Drive: Eve of Destruction offers players a selection of more than 30 custom vehicles, a dynamic soundtrack and a split-screen multiplayer mode for up to four players.

Well, at first I had gave this game an 8 but after replaying it for the hundreth time, I had to admit that this game lives in a very special and dear place in my heart, but sadly it still has issues and it's not perfect... not that any of this matters, right? Yeah, enough of philosophical bullshit, let's get to the review. This game is awesome, the tracks are cool, there are A LOT of game modes, a decent amount of cars and a lot of wrecks and crashes (in the sense of cars hitting each other, not hardware malfunction). The game has the Action Mode which is basically a Free Mode where you choose the car - Having the Compact, Midsize, Muscle and Special (each car also has three stats, Speed, Durability and Handling), the track and the game modes you want to play with (and also pick the AI difficulty). There's also a multiplayer that is also loads of fun. Then there's the Dare Mode, which is a bunch of events you must complete, putting you through different tracks, modes and cars. Your reward for completing the Dare Mode? You'll unlock the TURBO MODE in what the game calls "Feats". Feats are essentially "cheats" in the game for you to have a bit more challenge while playing or just having fun. With Turbo, your car basically has nitro and it is overpowered. There's also a mode that make exploding chickens fall out of the sky at random places, how cool is that? For you to unlock each Feat, you'll have to go through challenges and oh boy, some of those might be a pain in the ass to actually put out. Well, okay, now let's talk about the main point, the carrer mode. The lore is that you're the new driver in town (you must choose a name for your character and it is a selection of nicknames) and you must advance through the ranks to become the Top 1 driver, and you start at rank 100. You have Your Home where you can repair your cars (the more you crash your vehicle, the more irreparable damage your car will have, so you have to change it frequently) and switch them too to walk around. There's the dealership which offers a selection of different cars and you must think about what car is good for what, grinding (not really that bad of a grind) money for better more expensive cars, think about the stats, things like that. Then there's The Garage which you can upgrade your vehicle and "paint" it. There are only three upgrades you can buy once for every car, and those are based on the stats that each car have, so that means that I can only make the maximum of 3 upgrades in each car I bought, got it? Now, what about the "paint" thingy and why is it in quotation marks? Well... The livery editor sucks ass, you see, you can't paint nor choose the color of any car, the only way you can somehow do is in Action Mode, where you have a selection of different customized liveries for each car, but you can't create your own and I think this is really upsetting. You can't paint the whole car, it's just specific parts and controlling the analog stick to draw is awful. You can only draw smiley faces or dicks, but nothing too fancy. Another thing is that, I get it, it's a Destruction Derby game, cars are disposable, you own them, you crash them, and you replace them, so having the ability to visually customize your car would be pointless... right? Nah, I don't think so, Crash N Burn is another vehicular combat game for the PS2 and you can customize your ride just like in the old Need For Speed games and I get it too, they are different games with different approaches on destruction, Eve of Destruction tries its best to emulate the culture of Destruction Derby (which is a real thing if you didn't know, by the way), and Crash N Burn is just "haha car go boom" (cool game tho). Other than the livery editor and the lack of customization, there's also the lack of music. The soundtrack to this game is a 10/10, fantastic, post-hardcore, alternative metal, stuff like that. It really emphasizes the games vibes, but it is so incredibly short, you'll find yourself listening to the same song 5 times in a single session. Burnout 3 had about 40+ songs and this game has less than 20, that's something to think, huh? Other than that, I can't thing of many bad stuff about this game, the gameplay is very responsive and the cars handle juuuust right, the level design is really good, the tracks all complements everything + the game has a narrator that talks literally every second, he mocks you for hitting the wall, celebrates you for taking the leadership, for winning, for hitting cars, and he's AWESOME and super fun, a lot of people remember this game solely for the narrator, that guy's the GOAT. Anyway, this game is amazing, and replaying it now with RetroAchievements made me feel 100% accomplished, I love this game dearly and everybody that likes it too.
