Summary

Tales of Kenzera: Zau is a 2.5D metroidvania developed by Surgent Studios and published under the EA Originals label. The game follows Zau, a young shaman who bargains with Kalunga, the God of Death, to revive his father. Players explore the mythological lands of Kenzera, using Zau's athletic abilities—such as double jumping, wall jumping, and air dashing—to traverse the environment. Equipped with the sun mask for melee attacks and the moon mask for ranged combat, Zau can upgrade both weapons along distinct paths. As players gain new skills, they unlock previously inaccessible areas, progressing through a world filled with ancestral spirits and powerful monsters.

Although I have completed 60% of it, it was a very painful experience and I couldn’t force myself to play it any longer , initially the gameplay was good
but it gets boring after the first act and I had to force myself to play through the rest of it. The gameplay lacks depth

I played it like 4 hours i can say it is disappointed me sadly

The graphics where so good and so optimized but the game play was so simple so straight forward i felt im playing a baby game the combat where the same enemies and the first boss wasn't that cool the bow you have is annoying when the arrows end the system of the upgrade was awful like what am i doing there is no deferent base attack movements or power i was waiting the whole 4 hours from the game to bring me something cool and it didn't

My gameplay was fast for anybody wondering i was really fast by killing the enemies or even the platform there isn't hidden secrets or like hard platforms

The only impressive thing i felt is the visual effects and the graphics the story is so boring the voice acting was meh

I appreciate this one as a wholesome, poignant tale of a son coming to terms with his father's death, its more impactful moments accentuated by an understated score and wonderful voice acting. As a son who lost his father at 13, developments in the eponymous Zau's interactions with the world and supporting characters were resonant, but tend towards the rudimentary in their expression. I noticed an odd inconsistency, where the text for the Echoes collectibles could be quite sophisticated and poetic, but the dialogue between the characters just a bit too predictable. That said, it tells a story located in a tragedy most of us have to face at one point in our lives. I cannot help but respect the intention, and the vulnerable sincerity with which it is told.

Visually, it's far better from its default perspective (i.e. from afar) than when the game occasionally pivots to a closer camera. In each of those cases, I thought it'd have been less jarring to persist with the gorgeous 2D depictions of the characters, which are so vibrant in their colour, design and expressiveness. The environments are varied and charming, if not a little generic. Gameplay is very serviceable and, surprisingly, occasionally unforgiving. Navigation boasts the usual fare, and is a bit light-handed with the introduction of unique hazards. Although it has the propensity to trigger a flow state, it is usually quickly interrupted by a combat engagement. I found combat to be the weakest element of the game; its challenge ostensibly attributable to the impatience occasioned by binary enemy design. Your repertoire of abilities is limited and some enemies are annoyingly evasive or spongey.

Big props to Abu Salim and Surgent Studios for supporting video games as a medium to explore grief, invoking interesting and unrepresented Bantu folklore, and delivering a fun, brief experience.
