Sonic returns to the DS with all the classic 2D dual screen action of "Sonic Rush," as well as a new high-seas adventure where he clashes with ruthless pirates. As Sonic, set off from Windmill Village to explore seven islands for action-packed adventures spread across a large map. As you venture, you'll uncover valuable items and materials that will help Tails build new ships so that Sonic can track down the villainous pirates in a variety of ways.
One of my all-time favorite DS games since I was a kid! Sonic and Tails end up stranded on a remote island and have to figure out how to get back home. Along the way, they meet Marine, a super energetic (and slightly annoying) kid, and Blaze the Cat. The game lets you explore the ocean in search of materials or Emeralds, and depending on the vehicle you're on you get to play a different minigame while traveling. Once on land, you can play acts as Sonic (faster but not great in air) or Blaze (a bit slower but amazing in air). In my experience, playing as Blaze was so comfortable and cool that I literally never switched back.
The environments are stunning and packed with detail, and the gameplay is incredibly fast and satisfying—especially thanks to the air combo system. The soundtrack is fantastic too: every track is super memorable and fits the setting perfectly. The boss fights are also fun and creative. The story isn't anything special tbh. SRA itself isn’t too hard, but going for 100% completion or getting all S ranks is a bit of a challenge. The also sometimes requires you to replay the same stages multiple times to collect enough materials for building or upgrading vehicles. Personally, I didn’t mind since I really enjoy the levels, but I think it need to be mentioned.
As for the post-game, there’s so much to do: Challenges to get Chaos Emeralds and Sol Emeralds, vehicle upgrades, a secret final boss with the true ending, over 15 hidden islands, 100 missions, customization for the main island, and even a music player.
It’s an amazing game, and I absolutely love it, even though it’s quite different from classic 2D Sonic games. I haven’t played the prequel, so I can’t compare, but either way, I HIGHLY recommend it!
