Summary

The Nintendo DS port of Plants vs. Zombies.

High respect is owed to Plants vs. Zombies. A simple yet enjoyable take on the tower defence genre, and a trailblazer of the tower defence genre, this game blends simple strategy with admittedly aged and slow gameplay, not that it takes too much enjoyment away from the solid foundational experience it provides. The last world, that being the rooftop stage, is the highlight of the package, and the second to last level required some experimental thinking for which plants to bring to be able to conquer the stage. The game would’ve shined brighter if more of it matched this experience, as the prior worlds were at times a mindless slog of a rinse and repeat strategy, and at times quite bland gimmicks, specifically the water and fog stages. However, Plants vs. Zombies at its core provides an enjoyable take on the tower defence genre, and although it was primarily played as a background device to pass time at work, and had used fast forward to finish off some stages that I had definitively won by a certain point, it still provided an overall well rounded experience. Note that I played the DS variant, which I don’t believe would have caused any difference in my rating, but specifically for the enjoyment of nostalgia and the cute, condensed visual design.
