I went into this game expecting more of the same as the classic Doom games, and I was completely off. While the key gameplay remains front and center, this game feels so different. The differences include: the ambient music, puzzle solving that feels like a metroidvania, and enemy sprite changes. I want to touch on how the lighting is incredible and the gothic fantasy elements make the environments feel so much cooler than the older doom games. Another thing I’ll mention is that the secret levels are actually worth it this time around because you can get demon keys that upgrade the Unmayker (a crazy new demon gun). The Lost Levels that Nightdive added to this port add so much action and challenge. They did such a great job bringing this game to modern audiences. All of these things add up to make the quintessential classic doom experience in my humble opinion.
