25 Apr 1999 - WonderSwan
Digital Monster Ver. WonderSwan is a Japanese handheld version of the original Tamagotchi-like Digimon pet for the WonderSwan. It includes all of the original Digimon from the five different pet devices. In this game the player can have up to five different Digimon with them at a time. It even has computer controlled opponents to battle with. The game has the ability to connect to another WonderSwan through a special link cable. It can also hook up to the original pets through a Digimon "dock N rock" connector that comes packaged with the game. Digital Monster Ver. S: Digimon Tamers did much the same thing, only on the Sega Saturn. There is an English version produced for the Hong Kong region.
The Digimon battles have been greatly revamped, but still they are mostly a matter of luck and using items to boost your Digimon actions. I ended up winning all the 4 tournaments during my first generation of Digimons with Devilmon and Angelmon.
The "simulation" aspect is basically the same as the original virtual pet with some more extra content and the possibility to "freeze" a specific Digimon and suspend its care for as long as you want. You can grow up to 8 Digimons at the same time and that's quite insane!
The roster is also pretty big as It has every Digimon released untile 1999, and you can greatly speed up the growing process. That's both an incredible feature, and one of the most immersion breaking thing ever: I ended up just skipping most of the growth process and just focused on my fully growned Digimons for fighting. Having a console booted up all the time isn't a great idea, as it's not the same as the little original device, so most of the time you'll just skip everything just to get the Digimon you want. Which is, for some reason, incredibly difficult: I've lost count of how many fucking times I got Devilmon. I'm so sick of it.
Doesn't help that the game have something like, 3 OSTs, and the main one plays 99.99% of the time.
At the end of the day, this is a good game if you don't have an original Digimon portable device, otherwise I think it would result kinda useless as the original one Is easier to carry around and be taken care of.
The moment I got my first Digimon I immediately grew up bored of this game.
