Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth

Ace Attorney Investigations is a spin off of the main line Ace Attorney games, with a familiar yet different flavour to the usual gameplay.

Instead of alternating between long courtroom- and investigation sections, investigations instead tries to more rapidly switch between these two modes, by getting rid of court room sections and replacing them with smaller but similar confrontation sections that intersplice the investigations. As a result, these confrontations aren't as satisfying the replacement for the court room sections, as they lack the pacing and payoff of those, due to their length and constraints.
The investigation sequences on the other hand are mostly left intact from the originals' concept, with one of the couple new feature worth noting in the investigation sections being connecting pieces of evidence in Edgeworth's mind to formulate new conclusions, which is intriguing, yet the execution feels inconsistent. At times, you're supposed to link contradictions, while at other moments, you're connecting related evidence without much guidance, which can be confusing.
On of the other new features of course being that instead of first-person the investigation sequences are presented in third-person. In my opinion this really did not add or subtract anything. I suppose the main reason this was done is to distuingish it between the main line and spin off.

References are scattered abundantly throughout the cases, which could either please or annoy players, depending on their preferences. Speaking of references, the game suffers the classic "3rd case syndrom" of Ace Attorney games — it's overly drawn out and ultimately unexciting.

Shi-Long Lang is a character with fantastic design and a great theme, but his development feels incomplete. likewise, Kay, a character who had potential, often has little to contribute for most of the cases, to the point I sometimes forgot she was part of the game, which is a missed opportunity.

The overarching smuggling ring plot serves as the connective tissue between the cases, yet it fails to serve as framing device to build the characters or build sufficient interest or mystery until the final case. It is mainly treated in superficial and vague terms until the final case gets going.

While Ace Attorney Investigations attempts to focus and expand on a subset of the concepts of the main line series, while staying true to the franchise it is part of, it struggles to fully execute on it. I would have wished for a bolder approach with completely new concepts, unshackled from the expactations of the mainline series.

Absolute treat. The characters of investigations series have to be some of the most well written ace attorney characters (including returning characters). Although this is not a mainline ace attorney, this and investigations 2 are my favourite AA games.

I love this game. Sometimes I do prefer the being able to walk around and investigate the area mechanic. While other times I prefer just pressing buttons like the main games 😂 still a really enjoyable playthrough though.
